This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

The audiologist conducts a full range of audiological evaluations to determine nature, type, and severity of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders. They effectively counsel patients and family members regarding management of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders and independently apply professional contemporary audiologic treatments to the full range of patient populations. The Veterans Affairs Pacific Island Health Care System (VAPIHCS) is a Level 3 facility and ranks among a complex system in the VA serving the Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21). The VAPIHCS offers a full range of comprehensive health care services including Dentistry, Geriatrics & Extended Care, Imaging, Medicine Services, Mental Health Services, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, Primary Care, Rehabilitation Services, and Specialty Services. The VAPIHCS offers several special medical programs in include Home Health Services, Homeless Veteran Services, Pharmacy Specialized Services, Rurality, Spinal Cord Injury, TeleHealth, and Women's Health Centers. The VAPIHCS operates eight community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) covering seven county areas. These outpatient clinics are in American Samoa, Guam, Saipan, Hilo, Kauai, Kona, Leeward Oahu, Maui, and Windward Oahu. This position is located in the Akaka CBOC. The Staff Audiologist at this grade level serve in an audiologist career development position. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: ASSIGNMENT a. Performs audiology assessment and treatment interventions. b. Exercises clinical judgment. c. Adapts clinical procedures and techniques. d. Documents in the medical record appropriate information related to patient care. e. Uses knowledge of principles and techniques in audiology. EDUCATION a. Assists in orientation and training of new staff. b. Keeps current with theory and practice through continuing education programs, journals, textbooks, and other literature, and in-service programs. c. Provides patient and family education including informed consent. d. Follows applicable informed consent, HIPAA rules on privacy and protecting patient rights. ADMINISTRATIVE a. Participates in developing guidelines and protocols, new patient programs, and evaluation of existing programs. b. Maintains patient records and other data required by the clinic, service, and medical center. c. Maintains, supplies, equipment and clinical areas to optimize safety and efficiency. d. May be requested to service on service-level committees or task forces or to represent to service/section on medical center, network, or national committees. BASIC REQUIREMENTS A. United States Citizenship: You must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7407(a). B. English Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). C. Education: The individual must meet at least one of the following requirements below. NOTE: all applicants must submit a copy of their transcripts. Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CAA is the only accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit entry-level audiology programs. OR; Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the USDE. NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the CAA in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree or AuD programs in audiology. Foreign Education: To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. Such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs. D. Licensure Requirement: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. NOTE: all applicants must provide a copy of their licensure with their application. E. Grandfathering Provision: may qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Audiologist, GS-11: Employees at this grade level serve in audiologist entry-level developmental positions. Audiologists perform audiology assessment and treatment intervention, exercise clinical judgment, adapt clinical procedures and techniques and document in the medical record appropriate information related to patient care. Education Requirement: None beyond the basic requirements of this position. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the basic requirements, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice as defined by the American Academy of Audiology or the ASHA. Ability to interact with patients, families and other health care professionals. **NOTE: all applicants must demonstrate the possession of KSA's in their resume. KSA's must be detailed and must be reflected in the duties related to previous or current employments. Audiologist, GS-12: This is the full performance level for staff audiologists. At this level, audiologists are licensed to practice independently in the provision of audiologic services, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate. Audiologists serve as consultants to other health care professionals and are recognized subject matter experts on matters related to hearing, tinnitus and balance disorders. Experience Requirement: must have completion of one year of professional experience comparable to the next lower grade level of GS-11. NOTE: Experience is only creditable if it is postdoctoral experience performing the duties of a professional audiologist and must be directly related to the duties to be performed. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Skill in determining nature, type and severity of hearing/communication /vestibular disorders. Skill in counseling patients and family members regarding management of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional audiology to other health care professionals.
