The Air Force Research Directed Energy Directorate (AFRL/RD), Space Electro-Optics Division (RDS), Maui Optical and Supercomputing (AMOS) Site (RDSM), Security (RDSMS) seeks to hire a Police Officer (DU-0083-02). The primary purpose of this position is to perform a broad range of law enforcement, crime prevention, and evidence gathering duties. DU-0083-02 Position duties include, but are not limited to: Performs a broad range of law enforcement, crime prevention, and evidence gathering duties as a member of the Department of the Air Force Civilian Police at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex. Patrols the installation on foot; responds to alarms, irregularities, and unusual or suspicious circumstances. As a police officer, the work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as periods of standing, running, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms, pursuing suspects, or participating in weapons or other kinds of training activities, climbing stairs in office buildings, or conducting foot patrols in and around large buildings. Performs duties that effectively deter or prevent commission of damage, pilferage, vandalism or sabotage to Air Force equipment or property and protect Air Force and contractor personnel in accordance with Department of Defense, Air Force, and State of Hawaii regulations and instructions. Performs other duties as needed in support of the installation security forces operation. This may include administrative duties in support of priority resource, resource protection, confrontation management, counter-terrorism/force protection, physical security, operations security, information security, personnel and industrial security duties. Participates in joint training, exercises, and evaluations. Effectively performs basic life support procedures that are non-invasive.

  • This position has been identified as a designated position under the Air Force Drug Testing Plan. Incumbent of this position is subject to the possibility of a random drug test.

  • Incumbent must be qualified in the use of required weapons, as the incumbent will be required to use firearms in performing duties
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, required physical fitness/physical agility tests, meet established hearing standards and discern colors, contrast, and depth.
  • Must wear a uniform and meet applicable dress and appearance standards as identified in current Air Force Instructions.
  • Will be required to work an uncommon tour of duty, to include nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, rotating shifts, and recall.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing such as coats, boots, and vests and/or chemical protective equipment, (respirator mask).
  • Must undergo initial job compatibility assessment.
  • Must be able to operate all Security Forces Vehicles and installed equipment. Appropriate, valid driver’s license is required.
  • Incumbent will be required to attend a 10-week Police Academy at the VA LETC center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Selectee must also sign a 2-year continued service agreement with the Department of the Air Force upon starting the police academy.
  • Will be exposed to the day-to-day dangers associated with law enforcement and security duties.
  • This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function, which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
  • Recurring training is required to keep the incumbent knowledgeable on the updated specialized tactics, techniques and procedures, necessary for preparation and response to catastrophic events, terrorist attacks and related threats to installations.
  • It is required to obtain first responder training/certifications required in CPR techniques, self-aid buddy care, and first aid on the job and maintain annually.
  • Selectee may be required to serve a probationary or trial period.

Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements for Polices Series 0083 positions. SPECIALIZED EXPEREINCE: To qualify for this position, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the DU-01 (GS-01) broadband. Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position. OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPEREINCE: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying for grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): Your qualifications will also be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Problem Solving - Applies well-developed knowledge and skills to effectively perform a full range of moderately complex clerical/assistant/support work. Teamwork & Leadership - Contributes as a member of the team performing substantive clerical/assistant/support duties in support of the organizational mission.
