This position is part of the WAPA-UGP-Upper Great Plains. As a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, you will be planning, developing, and directing activities of the Region's Safety and Occupational Health programs and providing guidance to managers, supervisors, and employees in accomplishing objectives of the Safety program. **This is not a remote position. The selectee will be required to be physically present at the Huron, SD duty location.**

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. -OR- Specialized Experience: Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: For the GS-11 level: You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 pay grade or equivalent pay band. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience that demonstrates the ability to support a safety program and to apply knowledge of safety and health standards, laws, codes, policies for employees engaged in a construction/utility industry. Experience communicating safety practices to employees, contractors, and management officials to ensure safety hazards are addressed. -OR- Education: Ph.D. equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree LL.M., if related. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for grade 11. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: Combination of education and experience to successfully perform the duties of the position. (The total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the specialized experience requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the educational requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education). For the GS-12 level: You must have one year of specialized experience the GS-11 pay grade or equivalent pay band. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience assisting in the management of a safety program and applying knowledge of safety and health standards, laws, codes, policies for employees engaged in a broad range of high hazard functions directly related to the construction, operation and maintenance of facilities that contain high voltage power systems. Experience communicating safety practices to craft employees, contractors, and management officials to ensure safety measures are in place for safe operation in the maintenance of facilities that contain high voltage. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-in-Grade: Current career or career-conditional GS employees of the Federal government, or former career or career-conditional GS employees, who have a break in service of less than one year, are required to meet the time-in-grade restriction of one year of Federal experience at the next lower grade, with few exceptions outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b). Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to current career or career-conditional federal employees applying for a Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Education

If substituting education for specialized experience you must submit proof of your qualifying education. Failure to provide college transcripts may result in a rating of 'Ineligible'. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
