The position is at the journey level, located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS), a complexity level 1-a facility, in the Mechanical Unit of the Engineering Service. *** Please see Additional Information for Recruitment Incentives.

Duties

Reads and interprets blueprints; evaluates and troubleshoots malfunctions. Disassembles, fabricates, installs, and repairs general building service systems and equipment related to hospital functions. Works on items for surgery or the laboratory. Maintains equipment such as power saws, drill presses, grinders, etc. Determines the nature and extent of repairs necessary and makes needed repairs by replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts and components. Reassembles and installs the equipment, connects the power sources to perform operational and functional tests and makes required adjustments in order to ensure proper operation of the entire system. Installs, replaces, adjusts, and sets various regulating on safety devices such as meters, gauges, governors, and automatic alarms. Operates, repairs and maintains the 22 Emergency Generator power plants, in support of critical life safety equipment. Assists with testing of all systems associated with the operation of the life safety Emergency Power Systems. Understands and utilizes the proper tools and equipment for each job. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/30/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Employee frequently handle objects weighing 20 kilograms (45 pounds) and occasionally carry objects weighing 20 kilograms (45 pounds) and over for considerable distances. They are required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time. Usually performs work inside areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. They are frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Occasionally they climb and work from ladders and staging's exposing the employee to the possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, glasses and respirators are used.
