The motor Vehicle Operator is an integral part of the Transportation Section falling under the Grounds Maintenance Section of the Facilities Engineering Service. The location is the Coatesville VA Medical Center PA.
Duties
Operates gasoline or diesel powered vehicles which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight up to 26,000 pounds. Types of vehicles operated to include, but not limited to include dump trucks up to 10 tons, pick up trucks, box trucks, passenger vans, cargo vans, shuttle busses, sedans/ station wagons, busses/ motor coaches with a capacity of 52 passengers and a gross vehicle weight of 54,000 pounds.
Operates gasoline or diesel powered vehicles up to 54,000 pounds with air breaks.
Transports lab specimens to Philadelphia VAMC from Coatesville VAMC and CBOC's.
Works as an integral part of the facility snow removal team during winter months operating snow removal equipment to include but not limited to snow plows and salt trucks, 10 ton dump trucks, and tractors.
Conducts operations around various pavement conditions and in close proximity to fire hydrants, signs, vehicles and rails.
Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles operated (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, safety belts and washing the vehicle)
Operates grounds maintenance equipment such as but not limited to tractors, street sweepers, self propelled mowers when needed by the facility.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Must possess a current, valid state Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and air brakes endorsement.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Incumbent usually exert light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arm, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. They exert moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs. while loading and offloading cargo. May occasionally handle heavier objects while loading/unloading cargo, typically with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Greater physical effort may be needed when maneuvering the longer and heavier vehicles, especially when backing these vehicles. Patient transport vehicle drivers may be required to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping and bending. Incumbent must pass a VA Physical and adhere to all VA and DOT drug and alcohol testing and guidelines.
Working Conditions: Incumbents work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather and traffic conditions on both government and public roads. Incumbents are exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, broken bones, or serious injuries as a result of accidents while driving or from falling when loading and unloading vehicle. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
