Purpose of the position is the operation of a diesel-powered truck tractor with up to a 53-foot semi-trailer in transporting laundry loads to and from the
North, Central and South Texas VA Health Care Systems and Darnell Army Medical Center at Fort Hood in Killeen, TX. Position is in the Operations Section, Engineering Service, Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), Temple, TX.
Duties
Major duties include, but not limited to:
Operates tractor-trailer or truck and full trailer combinations. between Central Texas Veterans Health Care System sites, North and South Texas Veterans Health Care System sites, local hospitals, nursing homes, and other VA-and non-VA facilities; cleaning and washing vehicles; driving long distances, driving long hours, loads/unloads laundry containers.
Operate diesel-powered truck tractor with 53-foot semi-trailer which typically an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 pounds.
Select proper gear ratio for conditions present. Maintains overhead and side clearance, turning radius, braking distance, and following distance. Exercises defensive driving techniques by recognizing potential hazardous road and traffic conditions and selecting alternate routes to avoid potential problems.
Ensure cargo is secured and properly loaded. Notifies Supervisor when laundry truck will be delayed for more then one hour
Responsible for the careful and safe operation of this special purpose equipment to prevent injury to others and damage to property.
Physical effort is required in loading and unloading the laundry containers to and from the semi-trailer.
Knowledgeable of defensive driving technique, including skill to recognize developing hazardous road and traffic conditions and the judgment to select alternate routes to avoid potential problems and adjust their driving methods to the practices of the surrounding traffic in order to avoid accidents and to transport passengers/cargo safety.
Responsible for the careful and safe operation of the special purpose equipment to prevent injury to others and damage to property. Obeys all government regulations, ensures that passengers observe safety requirements (no smoking, safety belt use, remain seated, etc.), and ensures wheelchairs are locked in place.
