The position serves as a Recreation Assistant for the Whole Health System (WHS) at Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS) and reports to the Whole Health System Program Director within the Ambulatory Care service line in Pensacola, FL.
Duties

Major duties:
Prepares and sets up well-being class setting and equipment to support scheduled events and activities.
Instructs Veterans on the safe use of well-being equipment; provides transportation for off station recreational outings; ensures the safety of patients during all activities on and off station; exercises exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
Provides simple accurate instruction in mind-body wellness classes and recreational activities (yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, mindful meditation, etc.), such as various levels of stretching and relaxation and verbal, kinesthetic, or visual cues to correct body alignment during various movements.
Combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation appropriate for the level of the class.
Adapts well-being protocols to match patient ability and physical and mental limitations.
Communicates potential contraindications for every pose and practice.
Discusses with class participants any limitations in the patient's ability to practice mind-body wellness classes and recreational activities (yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, mindful meditation, etc.).
Monitors class participants to ensure proper use of equipment and postural alignment.
Provides written instruction for 'at home' and 'self-care' practices suggested in class.
Enters progress notes into electronic medical record for mind-body wellness classes and recreational activities (yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, mindful meditation, etc.)
Records attendance at classes in medical records, noting any precautions or clinically relevant outcomes.
Takes action and reports emergencies, medical or behavioral incidents or deterioration in physical and/or behavioral function to others and the supervisor as appropriate.
Engages in ongoing program improvement activities.
Reviews and recommends changes concerning the effectiveness of ongoing recreational programs from the standpoint of participant response, resources, unforeseen developments, and program objectives.
Coordinates with other staff members concerning the use of well-being facilities for activities and develops and maintains a calendar of programs and activities.
Develops marketing requests and advertising efforts for special events to encourage participation in well-being programs.
Recommends additions, deletions, or changes to facility rules and operating procedures.
Conducts regular inspections and inventories of Whole Health System (WHS) resources including equipment, supplies, and educational materials.
Participates in creating new well-being classes at GCVHCS when requested.
Identifies mind-body wellness classes and recreational activity (yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, mindful meditation, etc.) resources in local communities.
Participates in ongoing staff education as requested by the Whole Health System Program Director.
Conducts sessions to inform healthcare providers and patient groups about the benefits of mind-body wellness classes and recreational activities (yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, mindful meditation, etc.), when appropriate.
Acts as a mentor to mind-body wellness class and recreational activity (yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, mindful meditation, etc.) trainees, as needed.
Participates in meetings as necessary to report on progress and receive feedback on patients, programs, and interventions.
Maintains workload records and submits data through written reports or entries in appropriate computer data bases for compilation of administrative reports including Whole Health System, Medical Care Cost Distribution, Monthly Workload Reports, Event Capture/encounter reports, and others as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Experience: Holds, at minimum, a certification through a Yoga Alliance e-RYT 200 (experienced registered yoga teacher), holds an International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) certification (C-IAYT), or equivalent program (200 contact hour training plus 1000+ documented teaching hours).
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). To qualify for this position at the GS-6 level, you must meet one of the following:
Experience: MUST possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REFERENCED ABOVE, YOU MAY ALSO POSSESS THE FOLLOWING SPECIALIZED EXERIENCE: preparing and setting up yoga settings and equipment to support scheduled events and activities; developing marketing requests and advertising efforts for special events; conducting regular inventories of equipment and supplies; leading yoga classes for well-being and maintenance of health. Education: Successfully completed one half (½) year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent) with a major that included courses directly related to the work of the Recreation Assistant - Yoga Instructor position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted at the time of application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~
Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Recreation Assistant - Yoga Instructor position.
