This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Brookings, SD. In this position, you will operate and perform a wide range of duties necessary for the general maintenance, appearance, upkeep, and safety for the buildings and grounds. .

Duties

Mows lawn with riding and/or push mower and trims edges. Sprays pre-mixed weed and/or insect control solutions. Uses common hand tools and simple power equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, burnishers, clippers, weed trimmers, screwdrivers, low-pressure sprayers, and powered riding and push lawn mowers. Uses skills to lift and move moderately heavy objects. Conducts janitorial services.

Requirements

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Laborer, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration. Physical Effort The work of the position is divided between outdoor duties and indoor work. Outdoor work requires physical exertion, such as walking over rough, slippery, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; and infrequent lifting and/or moving of items up to 50 pounds. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as average agility and dexterity and may involve operating heavy power mowers on grades. Working Conditions Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Work performed indoors is often accomplished in office buildings or in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Work performed outdoors will involve exposure to weather conditions. The incumbent may be exposed to weather and temperature extremes, as well as drafts, noise, dust, and dirt. The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, equipment, or machines or exposure to irritant chemicals. The work requires the incumbent to stay continually alert and to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields. Exposure to moderate risks associated with working near operating machinery will occur. The incumbent is exposed to the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts, and scrapes, follows safety procedures, and uses standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
