This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, Atlantic Area (LANT), Coast Guard Fifth District, Prevention Division, Inspections and Investigations Branch, Portsmouth, VA.

Duties

As a Fishing Vessel Safety Program Coordinator, this position provides operation planning direction, subject matter expertise, and regional oversight of the Fifth Coast Guard District's prevention programs related to commercial fishing vessels. The mission of the Prevention Division is to administer prevention programs and activities to protect the public, ports and waterways, and the environment; and to support regional and national economic interests through prevention and mitigation of maritime incidents. The position is responsible for assisting the Chief, Inspections and Investigations Branch in providing operation planning direction, subject matter expertise, and regional oversight of the Fifth Coast Guard District's prevention programs related to commercial fishing vessels. Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • This position requires a Secret clearance.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-12 grade level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level (in the Federal sector.  Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.  Examples of specialized experience include:  Experience analyzing information obtained from prevention databases; Experience monitoring the effectiveness of laws, regulations and policy applicable to fishing vessels and preparing recommendations for amendment; Experience generating progress reports for the program and forwarding to operational and force readiness commanders and Commandant. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
