This position is at the full performance level located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the San Diego Healthcare System, in Engineering Service, Fleet Management section. The primary purpose of the position is to serve the Veteran under the supervision of the Transportation Supervisor.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Makes trip to medical facilities, homes, railway, bus stations and airports. Trips may require pick up from private homes, hospitals, nursing homes and doctor's offices; in some cases housing and employment areas in a timely and courteous manner.
Operate and perform operator maintenance on one or more motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, ambulances or patient transport vehicles, passenger shuttle vans, and cargo vans.
Operate platform, van or stake trucks and cargo vans to pick up and deliver materials and equipment or tow equipment to various locations and work sites.
Perform routine vehicle preventive maintenance checks and service of all vehicles operated.
Read installation maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route.
Enforce passenger safety and seatbelt use.
Know and abide by rules, laws and traffic regulations pertaining to state laws. When transporting patients, the incumbent must be able to load and unload patients safely.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: At this level drivers operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Drivers exert light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. They exert moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
