This position is located in the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES), Division of Systems Analysis (DSA), Radiation Protection Branch (RPB). The supervisor is John Tomon. The position is in the Bargaining Unit. This position has potential COR duties that may subject the incumbent to the Confidential Financial Disclosure reporting requirements. This position is subject to the security ownership restriction reporting requirements.

Duties

As a Health Physicist, you will serve in the areas of radiation protection, health effects, risk assessment, reactors, decommissioning, and dose consequence analysis. You will have responsibility for defining and developing needs, interfaces and resources for regulations and supporting guidance associated with the possession, use, transport, transfer, and disposal of byproduct, source, and special nuclear material and you will serve as a focal point for the development of NRC research programs to develop and validate computer codes used in health physics calculations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GG/GS-13) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.   SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is defined as: experience that demonstrates the knowledge of the theories, principles, and/or practices in the fields of health physics, including radiation physics, radiation biology, internal and external dosimetry, radiation detection and measurement, environmental radiation, or medical and industrial uses of radiation. In order to qualify for this position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:1.  Demonstrated knowledge of and experience implementing the principles, theories, and practices of power reactor radiation protection, health physics, internal and external dosimetry, radiological environmental monitoring, and radiation health effects on the public. 2. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with peers, co-workers, and various levels of management both inside and outside the agency. 3.  Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and manage complex and innovative safety research projects. 4. Demonstrated ability to communicate information, ideas, and advice in a clear, concise, and logical manner, both orally and in writing, with colleagues, subordinates, NRC management in headquarters or regions, members of the public, international organizations, representatives of professional groups or other Federal or State agencies. Education

Education Requirement for 1306 Series:

Basic Requirements:  Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR Combination of education and experience -- courses as stated above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.
