The position is located within the Health Disparities Research Section (HDRS), Laboratory of Epidemiology and Population Sciences (LEPS), National Institute on Aging (NIA). LEPS plans, conducts, and directs epidemiology, demography, and biometry programs relevant to the mission of the NIA.
Duties
Designs, plans, and performs non-routine and specialized densitometry procedures using techniques in accordance with established protocols and in coordination with physicians.
Performs preliminary quality control and analysis of the printed EKG output to determine if the EKG tracing is appropriate for interpretation.
Monitors physiological status of participant during procedures arid conducts participant education.
Recommends and implements actions necessary for the improvement of overall performance of medical equipment study.
Sets up, calibrates, standardizes, adjusts, cleans, and maintains new or recently modified DXA equipment used in research.
Monitors levels of inventory and participates in selection of new supplies and equipment.
Conducts comprehensive systematic quality control procedures and preventative maintenance on DXA scanner on a regular basis and maintains proper electronic and written records for quality control reports.
Conducts comprehensive systematic quality control procedures on the EKG machine on a regular basis. Order parts needed for the EKG machine and maintain calibration records.
Obtains analytical data and develops reports to medical staff. Knowledge and skills in recording data, maintaining records about patients and instrumentation, and creating and adhering to scheduled protocols for equipment management.
The duties described above are at the full performance level of GS 09, if you are selected at a lower grade, you will essentially perform a variety of duties as those at the full performance level described above, however, duties will be performed under closer supervision with more detailed guidance.
Requirements

Qualifications
You qualify at the GS-08 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Performing scans in a supervised setting using X-Ray related equipment; implementing new or changing instrumentation procedures; assisting in calibrating, operating, and maintaining X-Ray related equipment; and reading test results and providing advice on patient condition.
You qualify at the GS-09 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Independently performing scans using X-Ray related equipment (including DXA or EKG); providing training to staff in new or changing instrumentation procedures; preparing test results for physician review; calibrating, operating and maintaining X-Ray related equipment; maintaining detailed records and preparing record of test results; and evaluating test results to determine patient condition; OR
B. Successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or an LL.B. or J.D. This degree major must have been in a field of study with coursework directly related to the work of the position to be filled, that included at least 24 semester hours in courses such as biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, medical technology, or physics. Of the 24 semester hours, at least 12 must have been in a field directly related to the specialization of the position.
