The Pharmacy Technician is a certified professional expected to provide a variety of complex technical functions that requires the application of an extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. The employee assists the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision and goals of VA Healthcare System.
Duties
Order Entry & Prescription Processing
Review pending prescription orders for accurately in computer system and for verification by a pharmacist.
Provides a secondary back-up review for the pharmacist for patient allergies, eligibility, dosage, schedule, duration, instructions, any potential drug- drug, drug disease, drug-nutrient interactions, and therapeutic duplications as well as identifying any potential patient compliance problems.
Prioritizes operations and assigned clinical functions to provide the highest quality of patient care.
Reports all potential patient or pharmacy distribution problems verbally and/or in writing as requested by the pharmacist in the area assigned.
Coordinates and completes CMOP administrative processes such as telephone and internet refills. Input new, refill and mail prescriptions into the computer system.
Understand the function and activity of the computer and consult with clinical pharmacists as appropriate concerning operation or compliance related issues.
Clinical and Pharmacoeconomic
Reviews medication profiles for prescription duplication, therapeutic duplication, prescription noncompliance, and allergies / adverse drug reactions. Reports identified patients to assigned pharmacist for further evaluation.
Reviews laboratory monitoring reports for selected disease states, identifies patients with lab values beyond normal limits, and reports these patients to the assigned pharmacist for further evaluation.
Reviews medication profiles and assists the pharmacist with medication reconciliation as assigned.
Provides education for patients concerning operational issues or need for therapy compliance.
Documents clinical and operational activities as assigned
Participates in quality improvement processes and programs as assigned.
Other Support Functions
Perform and support Outpatient and Inpatient functions and duties of a Pharmacy Technician GS- 6 at the same or lower grade GS-5.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS.
a. Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a).
b. Education or Experience.
(1) None required.
(2) For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
c. Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
(1) Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
OR
(2) National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
Grade Determinations:e. Pharmacy Technician, GS-07. (1) Experience. Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
(2) Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
(a) PTCB as a CPhT.
OR
(b) NHA as a ExCPT.
(3) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work.
(b) Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent.
(c) Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers.
(d) Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students.
(e) Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution.
(f) Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases

May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment.
Environmental Factors: Outside and inside constant noise, dust, working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles, working with hands in water, working closely with others; working alone, protracted or irregular hours of work, solvents and heat from equipment.
