The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical health physics support at the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) Safety Office/Radiation Protection Branch.
Organiztional location of this position is: Air Combat Command (ACC), Sixteenth Air Force (16AF), Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC), Safety Office (SE), Patrick SFB FL.
Duties
DUTY 1 - Assists the Primary RSO in administering the unit radiation safety program worldwide
DUTY 2 - Responsible for implementing and performing procedures to determine if/when people are exposed to radiation hazards, and operation and calibration of any/all equipment required
DUTY 3 - Develops and provides authoritative advice and direction, on behalf of the AFTAC Commander and the AFTAC RSO
DUTY 4 - Develops and implements proper procedures to store, ship (within the US and internationally), handle, and disposal of
radioactive materials
DUTY 5 - Clearly presents to the AFTAC Commander and the AFTAC RSO any radiation safety concerns
DUTY 6 - Responds to radiological incidents/accidents, with immediate response for personal health safety and controlling the extent of contamination, ensuring appropriate use of bioassay, and ensuring compliance with all health safety regulatory requirements and appropriate ASTM Standards.

- All new DCIPS employees are required to complete a two-year DCIPS trial period.
- Must Obtain/Maintain Top Secret Security Clearance with SCI . A non-disclosure agreement must be signed.

- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Testing Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.

- Employee may be required to undergo CI polygraph examinations in accordance with security regulations involving material handled

- Certain aspects of the work involve exposure to many hazards and discomforts, such as toxic chemicals, high noise levels, and excessive
heat. The employee is required to use a variety of protective equipment and clothing.

- Training and experience in the physical or biological sciences or in engineering with 40 hours of formal RSO training is desired.
- Additional formal training in radiation safety management, radiation dose assessment, and emergency response is preferred. Five years prior experience with radioactive material measurement devices is desired
Qualifications
This is a GG-12 position in the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS). The GG-12duties for the "Technial" work category are at the "Full Performance" work level and are equivalent to those at the GS-12 level. The selectee's salary will be set within the grade equivalent to a GS/GG grade based on the selectee's qualifications in relation to the job.
BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above):
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy.
Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents.
NOTE: IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS ABOVE APPLICANT MUST ALSO MEET THE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume must reflect the quality level of experience which demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for successful job performance required for this position. Examples of creditable experience include: Knowledge of nuclear weapons effluent materials, using this knowledge to identify the correct type of radioactive permits. Knowledge and ability to select appropriate radiation measuring instruments, to include knowledge of instruments limitations and the data produced is preferred. Knowledge in internal dosimetry, external dosimetry, and medical effects of ionizing radiation and the amendments that are required based on mission requirements Note: Creditable experience may include previous military experience, experience gained in the private sector, or experience gained in another government agency.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Extensive knowledge of and experience in performing complex external dosimetry, internal dosimetry, shielding activity, calculations, radiation safety and health physics auditing functions, knowledge of NRC and 91(B) licensing processes, scientific and technical knowledge of radioactive materials use, permitting, licensing, behavior and regulations, and practical knowledge of the Air Force and management of radioactive materials in the Air Force.
2. Skill in communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships, building consensus and coalitions, negotiating, and resolving conflicts with a variety of individuals and organizations. Knowledge of security procedures to maintain control of classified material.
3. Knowledge of advanced principles, theories, and practices of health physics and the physical sciences as they apply to radiation
protection areas and able to apply new methods and theories to newly developed technologies as they are used in USAF operations.
4. Knowledge of all pertinent guidance for radiation protection including, but not limited to International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), international Council on Radiological Units (ICRU), and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
5. Knowledge and experience in the calibration, optimization, use and troubleshooting of health physics instrumentation, to include ionization chambers, proportional counters, Geiger-Muller counters, gas-flow counters, inorganic scintillators, and semiconductor detectors.
6. Ability to quickly assimilate disparate data and render knowledgeable and accurate assessments of the implication of such data; to make decisions, estimates, and recommendations under conditions of urgency and pressure based on mature judgment and experience, and to present and argue for a position effectively.
