The Medical Technician position is located in the Pathological and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Gulf Coast Veterans Healthcare Center in Mobile, Alabama.
Duties

***NOTE: This is a Part-Time position (20 hours/week). Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.***
Major duties and responsibilities of this position include:
Answers inquiries from providers, nurses, etc. on how to use laboratory information system, how to access orders test status, and test description information.
Collects and/or evaluates suitability of specimen for testing, prepares it, carries out the tests ordered
Performs laboratory verification of outpatient glucose meters, with educational assessment of patient's whole blood glucose testing technique.
Prepares reagents, standards and control materials where necessary in Chemistry, Toxicology, Hematology, Coagulation Microbiology, Immunology, and Ancillary Testing.
Calibrates and operates equipment as determined by quality controls and standards.
Selects, performs, evaluates, and monitors the performance of non-routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.
Writes laboratory reports (identifying sample and stating methods and results), reports results of laboratory tests to appropriate individuals.
Watches for safe operation of equipment, hazardous situations, proper handling of chemicals, infectious material, and institutes corrective action if necessary.
Tests performed are all of those offered by the automated equipment and the following:
a. Hematology- Cell counts and differentials on blood with smears when necessary, and reticulocyte counts
b. Coagulation- Performs Prothrombin Time and Partial Activated Prothrombin Time tests.
c. Microbiology- Prepares specimens to be shipped to Biloxi and/or reference laboratory.
d. Urinalysis- Does routine urinalysis; Chemistry; Performs routine and stat; Immunology Toxicology
Ability to prepare specimens for transport to reference labs.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Part-Time - Monday - Friday - 8:00 AM - 12:30PM - OR - 12:30PM - 4:30PM - Applicants must be available for either tour. Hours are subject to change based on the organizational needs.

To qualify for this position you must meet the following:

You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equips me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position at the GS-5 level. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the GS-04 level in Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: Experience that may have been gained in (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g. biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions being filled.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE
Possess the successful completion of a four (4) year of course of study to a Bachelor's degree with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position being filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (Transcript required.)

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Possess the equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education, as described above, to meet the total experience requirements for the Medical Technician position. Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. (Transcript required.)

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurrent standing, bending, lifting of some heavy containers, trips to wards for specimen collection, handling of uncooperative patients occasionally and walking a lot between several sections of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. May require reaching and bending to obtain supplies and operation of instruments. Occasionally lifts 20-40 pound containers of liquid reagent.
