The Industrial Equipment Repairer - Maintenance Worker performs a wide variety of tasks involving specific and general installation, equipment repairs, assembly/disassembly, minor improvement, and maintenance support, as part of the Facilities Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Lyons, New Jersey.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Performing a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep, repair, maintenance, and improvement of the medical center Assembling, disassembling, repairing, adjusting, altering or fabricating hospital grade equipment Mounting items to walls, floors, or ceiling Cutting, drilling, bending, turning, grinding, threading, sealing pressing, and adjusting hospital grade equipment Demolishing, installing, modifying, altering, servicing, repairing, replacing, measuring, assembling, removing, restoring, realigning, dismantling, or constructing a wide variety of items associated with medical and mechanical structure Using test equipment and measuring devices such as levels, feeler gauges, dials indicator, micrometers, tachometers, and calipers to repair, adjust, and test machinery and equipment Performing other related duties and assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Subject to overtime and emergency callbacks Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not Authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: May be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffold, platforms, and manlifts for hard-to reach places. May be required to stand, stoop, kneel, bend, climb, walk, lay, reach, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Handles and occasionally carries objects weighing up to 45 pounds. Required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained period of time. Must meet the physical requirements of the position. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and other hazardous conditions. Usually performs work in areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges, and to noise and vibration from machines. Occasionally climb and work from ladders and staging's, exposing repairer to the possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and glasses are used. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-Out Element) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials Trouble shooting IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
