This position is located in the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), Office of Investigations (OI), which is responsible for overseeing and conducting criminal and administrative investigations, and providing related services to the U.S. Department of the Treasury to ensure the integrity of programs operated or funded by the Department. The incumbent serves as a full performance criminal investigator, conducting the full range of criminal and noncriminal investigations.

Duties

As a Criminal Investigator (Special Agent), you will: Analyze, plan, coordinate, and conduct investigations of the full range of complaints and allegations received by the OIG. Cases may be assigned by the ASAC or be self-generated from leads provided by a variety of sources. Ensure supervisory participation in operations where required either by regulation or by practice. Such operations include some types of undercover activities, especially where money changes hands, interagency investigations where OI has the lead or a major role, and the administration of search and arrest warrants. Use a full range of investigative techniques. These include face-to-face and telephone interviews, some of which may be recorded, with or without the prior knowledge and consent of the interviewee. Other sources of information are tips from informants; data bases, including those maintained by FinCEN; telephone records, bills, receipts, and vouchers; real estate and investment transaction records; and financial and production documentation. Establish and maintain contacts with U.S. Attorney's Office in each case's jurisdiction to ensure sufficient evidence is accumulated to bring cases to prosecution.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Maximum entry age requirements, physical qualifications, medical qualifications, etc. For the 1811 series: Medical Requirements: The duties of positions in this series require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform the duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to him/her, or others is disqualifying. Age Restriction: The date immediately preceding an individual's 37th birthday is the maximum entry age for original appointment to a law enforcement officer position. This requirement does not apply to a) Preference-eligible veterans; OR b) Individuals who are 37 years of age or older and have previously served in law enforcement officer positions that were covered by a special law enforcement retirement plan. Specialized Experience: For the GS-13, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience at this level is defined as:- Conducting complex criminal investigations, as a criminal investigator with the authority to arrest, to determine violations of Federal laws, including Title 18 and Title 31 of the U.S. Code. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-13 you must have been at the GS-12 level for 52 weeks.
