About the Position: Serves as an author-historian, responsible for the research and writing of a major Army historical volume. Responsible for developing all phases of the working plan, taking into account the time available for the accomplishment of the project.

Duties

Conducts interviews with participants and firsthand observers. Responds to request for information in areas of expertise from the public, the Army Staff, and other agencies. Recommends revisions to improve work of others, including colleagues, more junior historians, and research assistants with a view towards scholarly content, writing style, and conformance with CMH and academic guidelines and standards. Selects and organizes material to provide a complete picture, stressing events of greatest significance and clearly laying out relations between them.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • One year probationary period may be required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • You may be expected to travel up to 10% for this position.

Basic Requirement for Historian: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes researching and/or writing historical volume under rigid time constraints; organizing material to provide a complete volume of historical publications; analyzing material to be included in published study; and coordinating selection of photographs and preparation such as appropriate maps, graphs, and other illustrative materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: History and ArchaeologyOral CommunicationTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
