This position is located within the Building Maintenance Shop, Engineering Service, Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN. The incumbent assists in the performance of a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Two or more trade practices are applied in the performance of the work.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Assists the carpenter or journey level workers through orders by performing a variety of helper carpentry duties such as: clean the shop, build and install book shelves, repair furniture, install curtain rails, rehang boards, install splash shields, hang cabinets on the wall, build counter tops, disable furniture, repair trim, install ceiling tiles, install safety mirrors, remove drywall, repair coat racks, replace hinges, install handrails, cut and install carpet, help with the hanging of doors as well as assist with the building of solid surface counter tops.
Independently operates hand tools and simple power equipment such as lawnmowers, walking-type power mowers, edger's, weed eaters, commercial mowers, handsaws, hatchets and clippers to mow the grass and clear small trees and bushes and remove snow.
Responsible for: emptying all trash cans on the grounds and cleaning trash cans as needed; minor snow removal from sidewalks and apply salt as needed.
Occasionally work with flower beds, trim bushes; perform a variety of manual tasks such as moving, arranging, collecting and cleaning equipment and materials (such as move and arrange furniture).
Responsible for loading, unloading, moving and stacking materials such as heavy boxes, and bulky items by hand, hand trucks or dollies. Set up tents, grilles, tables etc. for outside events. Clean storm drains.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Related experience includes: performing carpentry duties to build, remove, disassemble, repair, replace, install, and maintain various building structural components; using basic trade mathematics to measure and lay out work; using and maintaining hand and power tools; reading and interpreting work orders and blueprints; and selecting the appropriate tools and materials to complete each project. Physical Requirements: This position requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, as well walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying, and pushing or pulling moderately heavy loads. The Maintenance Worker frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 75 pounds. When at a job site, strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials.
Working Conditions: This position may require working overtime, in uncontrolled environments, from ladders and rooftops. Incumbent shall be subjected to the hazards normally encountered in the trade.
Some work is performed in shop areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, particulates in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with heating/cooling and other related power equipment. At times, the maintenance mechanic is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment. Sometimes they are required to make repairs and installations in bad weather.
Work assignments involve a thorough knowledge of hazardous material handling and related activities. Incumbent is required to successfully complete a variety of hazardous material classes. There is a possibility of exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes from spills and/or leaks and incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.).
