The primary purpose of this position is to provide instructions to patrons in a variety of physical fitness classes. This position is located in the Fitness Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Installations, State or Country.

Duties

Screen participant for cardiovascular risk factors prior to exercise via a comprehensive medical history and health habits questionnaire. (Refers high-risk patrons to Supervisor). Recommends means for modifying cardiovascular risk factors, body fat and improving nutritional habits within guidelines recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Assists in designing individualized exercise programs for patrons based on their goals or current fitness status by performing fitness profile testing. (Aerobic capacity, blood pressure, heart rate and body composition). Incumbent will lead classes, provide personal instructions and be informed on correct exercise procedures and nutrition programs. Conduct an ongoing variety of fitness classes and set up individual fitness programs for patrons on various fitness equipment, ensuring that the patron fully understands how to safely exercise and operate all fitness equipment. Provides a variety of ongoing fitness programs and instructions such as introduction to fitness lifestyle changes, basic muscular toning, circuit training, aerobic conditioning training, etc. Instructs and demonstrates proper biomechanics technique for use of all resistance training and cardiovascular exercise equipment. Explains applicable kinesiology of each machine. Shows patrons how to properly monitor heart rate while exercising and provide patrons with the knowledge of basic kinesiology as it relates to resistance training machines and free weight equipment. Demonstrates and explain the importance of warm- up, cool- down and flexibility. Enforces all rules and regulations of the fitness center and higher authority elements are followed. Ensure the fitness faculty operation is maintained in accordance with MWR and Navy regulations and instructions. Issue workout charts and other additional paperwork. Responsible for upkeep of records (financial transactions, daily activity reports etc.) Attends meetings, workshops and seminars presented by the Fitness Director and other outside organizations. Keep up-to-date on the latest training techniques and developments. Implements new training materials into the fitness programs that promote the health and well being of patrons. Coordinates with Fitness Director and assist with developing educational material for patrons (flyers, videos, bulletin boards, etc.) and designs and implements facility and community programs. Assist with preparing an annual budget for facility operation and all fitness requirements. Incumbent must exercise tact, good manners and courtesy when serving and assisting customers. This will be expressed by tactfully responding to patron inquiries and assisting in a prompt and friendly manner. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must upload a current CPR and first aid qualifications
  • You must go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9.
  • May be required to pass pre-employment examinations.
  • A valid State driver's license is required to operate motor vehicles.
  • Must have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

Practical knowledge of Exercise Science, Physical Fitness or related field. Must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Must possess previous experience as group exercise/fitness instructor or have current accredited certifications like (the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), certification from the Cooper institution of Aerobic Research, American Exercise council (ACE), or other nationally recognized certifying agency or able to obtain certification within 90 days of employment. Knowledge of basic cardiovascular risk factors, weight loss and nutritional habits, proper biomechanic techniques and fitness profile testing. Must have proper skills for instruction and proper use of exercise equipment. Must have the ability to handle emergency situations. Must be able to follow instructions in performing duties. Must possess current CPR and first aid qualifications. Must be able to assess patron interests and needs. Should be knowledgeable of publicity materials. Must have the ability to maintain records and reports and the skill to deal effectively with others. Supervisor of this position is the Fitness Director who will Assing work in terms of overall objectives, basic priorities and class schedules. Incumbent will act independently, under the program activities and is available when unusual situations arise. Work is reviewed in terms of compliance with established guidelines and practices. Program policies, procedures, and regulations are available, but may require some adaptation. Deviations are referred to supervisor. Incumbent will administer the program according to the Navy instructions, standard operating procedures (SOP), MWR department policies, procedures and verbal instructions, and in accordance with DoD, navy and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines. Motivates participants to develop healthy lifestyles. Develops and conducts exercise routines, instructs in proper techniques use of equipment and provides general information on fitness and nutritional needs. Work involves activity in a Resistance training group fitness and cardiovascular fitness facility. This includes designing and implementing exercise programs for patrons, screening patrons for cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health risks, instructing exercise classes in accordance with established industry guidelines in a safe and effective manner, and instructing proper biomechanic techniques on all pieces of exercise equipment. Knowledge of physical fitness is necessary for this position. Public relations and promotional skills are helpful to assist in the continued success of the Navy Fitness Program. This position promotes participation in fitness activities and utilization of the fitness center. Instructional classes provide a positive impact on the physical, mental and social well being of all participants. Work involves assisting patrons in determining and fulfilling their physical fitness needs, promoting a more healthy lifestyle through participation in a variety of programs offered by the Fitness Division and acts as liaison between the Fitness Director and patrons. The work effects the physical and mental well being of military personnel, family members, retirees and other authorized patrons utilizing the fitness facilities Incumbent will be in contact with class participants, fitness center patrons, other departmental employees and management as well as members of various organizations on base and interested groups in the local Navy and civilian community. To provide exercise guidance and instructions as well as general information on fitness and healthy lifestyles. Work includes lifting, pushing and pulling, utilizing all major muscle groups in the demonstration of exercises and equipment and aerobic activities, i.e., running, jumping, etc. Must be capable of operating all equipment used in the various programs. May require some lifting of boxes of stock merchandise. The incumbent works the majority of time indoors in either an office or one of the fitness areas. Work is performed in a well heated/air conditioned, adequately lighted facility. The remaining time is either spent outdoors or at other Fitness Department facilities There are everday risks requriring normal safety percations typical of a fitness facilty. .
