The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Grounds Management Operations (GMO) of Smithsonian Gardens (SG) within the Smithsonian Institution (SI). Smithsonian Gardens is a Smithsonian recognized collections unit which manages collections of garden artifacts, living plants and the Archives of American Gardens.
Duties
The Biological Science Technician (Horticulture) will serve as a field assistant to the horticulturist in SG providing a full scope of gardening work.

Qualifications
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as: working in a public garden, ground’s maintenance, commercial landscape or nursery setting performing gardening tasks and operating small to medium sized power operated landscape equipment which includes leaf blowers, rototillers, string trimmers and lawn mowers. Experience must also include applying chemical substances such as herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to manage weed control and pests.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.OR Education: Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment.
