This position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Unit, Facilities and Engineering Service of the Wilmington VA Medical Center (WV AMC) and reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor. This Center includes a hospital, a 60-bed Community Living Center, and approximately 500,000 sq. feet of floor space.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The painter performs all duties associated with the application, maintenance, and repair of all types of finishes, including special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining, by using coating materials that are prepared in special and common way and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives, applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices including those designed to give special effects, for example, brushes, rollers, spray guns, and graining devices. Ensures that the coating finish meets match, texture, decorative, thickness, and level requirements, check such things as viscosity of coating materials and thickness of coatings on surfaces. Adds various agents (for example, retardants, drying agents), and combine coating mixtures to get the proper color, texture, consistency, and drying state. Coverings on plastered walls, metal and wood surfaces, roads, parking lots, furniture, small patching needs and equipment, after proper surface preparation, to insure good adhesion. Expected to perform as a competent skilled painter, using initiative; selecting materials, and planning the work and techniques for each assignment without reference to the supervisor, unless a highly unusual problem is encountered or a significant departure from normal procedures is requested. keeps shop and work areas and equipment clean, secure and orderly; observes safe practices; and safely and properly removes and disposes of waste, debris and excess materials. Performs other related duties as assigned and may be required to become familiar with some of the basic functions, procedures, methods and skills of some other related work and assist in these functions in the absence of some other related work and assist in these functions in the absence of other personnel, to the extent of the employee's competence and ability. Performs general labor duties as directed by the supervisor Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am until 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Painter/PD02360A and PD042260 Physical Requirements: The incumbent prepares, and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Most work requires the patient to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequent lifting, carrying, and setting up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds, and occasionally 40 pounds or over occurs. He/she is standing or walking much of the time and must be in good overall physical condition. Physical capability to regularly walk long distances, dexterity and accurate eye ­hand coordination, and corrected 20/20 vision and accurate color perception are required.
