This position is located in the Clinical Laboratory section of Tohatchi Health Center, a satellite clinic of Gallup Indian Medical Center. The purpose of this position is to perform specifically described, clearly defined, non-professional laboratory tasks in support of the Tohatchi Laboratory mission.
Duties
Transport biohazard patient samples from one area to the next. This requires packaging specimens for the indicated temperature for a good viability. Also requires knowledge and skills to handle different chemicals.
Phlebotomy and other specimen procurement. Obtain venous and laboratory and capillary blood samples using proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen requirements. Instructs patient in proper collection of urine samples and other biological specimens.
Specimen assessing. Logs laboratory requisitions into Tohatchi Laboratory computer system.
Performs urine chemistry screening procedures using automated urinalysis instrument for specific gravity, protein, ketones, glucose, bilirubin, urobilinogen, nitrate, and leukocyte esterase. Performs initial culture (plating procedures from biological specimens. Performs HCG testing.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
For GS-3: Successful completion of (a) a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (b) 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological science.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-3: 6 months of general experience and/or 1 year above high school education with course listed in Basic Qualifications above.
General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
