Duties
You will work within the Region Legal Service Office Southwest Legal Assistance Department.
You will provide legal consultation, advice, assistance and limited scope representation to active duty and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their dependents; and others entitled by statute or regulation to military legal assistance.
You will train junior military attorneys and all office personnel to proficiently perform a wide range of legal and paralegal duties.
You will serve as an information clearinghouse for legal assistance staff;
You will stay current on new developments affecting the provision of legal assistance services; maintain a current log of pertinent federal, state, local and Navy references, instructions and regulations.
You will regularly communicate and disseminate new information to legal assistance staff in other offices within the command’s area of responsibility.
You will maintain an effective preventative law program by developing materials and programs to educate Service members and their families about the availability of legal services.
You will build and maintain relationships with organizations that provide legal resources, such as Legal Aid and the American Bar Association and make referrals to those organizations as appropriate.
You will provide individual legal advice, limited scope representation, and staff training on a wide variety of core subject areas, including but not limited to:
Wills and Estates: provide estate planning advice and draft wills and ancillary estate planning documents;
Domestic Relations Advice: divorce, legal separation, annulment, child custody/support, spousal support, division of civilian/military retirement benefits, property allocation, paternity, guardianships.
You must be able to competently discuss the complexities of the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act, as well as, the Former Spouses Protection Act and its ramifications on service member’s retirement;
Immigration and Naturalization: advice and guidance to service member military naturalization and immigration for dependents of active duty members, to include immigration and naturalization protocol and procedures;
Real Property Renters’ Rights;
Service members Civil Relief Act;
Real property purchases, sales, and leases: explain contractual terms of purchase agreements for personal residences and legal effect and meaning of lease clauses. Advice on qualifying for capital gains exclusion on sale of principal residence;
Civil suits: general procedural advice and overview of possible causes of action in civil matters;
Consumer affairs: rights and remedies concerning consumer rights when dealing with merchants, lenders, and credit reporting agencies;
Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- The selectee is required to meet one or more of these employment conditions before the appointee will receive a tentative offer of employment.
- A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to report to any of the scheduled appointments, fails, the medical/agility/drug tests, lacks the certifications requirements, or is unable to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.
- Incumbents of drug testing designation positions will be subject to random testing. Drug test results will be provided to the employing activity/command.
Qualifications
Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school, be a member in good standing with State Bar of California, and have attorney experience in excess of 2 years commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of this position. Must be able to both advise and advocate for individual clients and also teach simple estate planning, family law, consumer law, landlord tenant law, and real estate transactions to new attorneys.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
