The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Facilities Management Service Line, Maintenance and Operations Team, Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, NC. The purpose of the position is to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate electronic controls and indicating and recording systems throughout the medical center related to HVAC, boiler and chiller plant equipment.

Duties

The incumbent performs preventive and corrective maintenance and acts as a technical specialist to other employees and station management staff as assigned by the supervisor The incumbent is responsible for major repairs, minor improvements, and modifications to existing equipment and structures Incumbent writes plans, layouts, sketches, and estimates of time and materials for assigned repairs, preventive maintenance and minor improvements The incumbent troubleshoots highly complex systems of electronic sensing and control, such as the Siemens Apogee Insight system and the Trane Tracer Summit system Troubleshoot, diagnose, replace, repair and evaluate this system and its subsystems and components by use of multi-meters, manometers, temperature sensors, hygrometers, anemometers, logic diagrams, as-built electronic control drawings, electronic schematics and manufacturer's literature. Cuts, brazes and solders piping, wiring and circuit boards Reviews construction plans, verifies their correctness and provides feedback regarding building automation controls consistency and ease of maintenance, and expandability Works with other journeyman, workers, or helpers to accomplish repairs or Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMI) Provides innovative ideas to reduce energy usage through awareness of energy conservation measures and an excellent command of the various control system programming and software tools Makes recommendations or suggestions and presents them to the supervisor for final approval and action Provides on-the-job training to all Operations Unit Air Conditioning Mechanics as well as Utility Systems Repairer-Operators as it relates to the Building Automated System controls functions Makes data entry in the Automated Engineering Management System/Medical Equipment Reporting System (AEMS/MERS) work order system and Mailman Inputs and closes out work orders Routinely generate 2237 requests (Request, Tum-In, and Receipt for Property or Services) for parts and materials required to accomplish assigned tasks, and follows-up on status with supervisor using the work order system and other methods to ensure acquisition requests are being processed. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work assignments require moderate physical effort. Regular duties require work in cramped, hot, humid, and otherwise unpleasant surroundings. Work is done from ladders and scaffolding, as well as in crawl spaces and mechanical equipment rooms. Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, and climbing. It requires the frequent lifting and carrying of weights up to 50 pounds. The incumbent is required to climb and work n high places.
