Employee will be assigned to Industrial Hygiene Division, Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, North Chicago, IL, identifying, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards by conducting industrial hygiene surveys, personal exposure and general area monitoring, asbestos identification on building materials, etc., and making recommendations to control workplace hazards.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Develops, implements, maintains, and coordinates a comprehensive industrial hygiene program; develops facility industrial hygiene policies, programs, and procedural documentation. Plans, conducts, and writes reports of comprehensive industrial hygiene survey evaluations of work processes involving potential exposure to chemical, physical, and biological stressors. Performs exposure monitoring, analyzes findings, and recommends corrective measures and controls. Performs, organizes and/or directs surveys and investigations in a wide variety of industrial and administrative facilities to determine nature and severity of hazards. Participates in special studies, ergonomic evaluations or investigations related to a specific occupational health issue, complaint, or suspected occupational medical conditional related to environmental factors and stressors. Provides consultation and advice to activities in regard to occupational health and industrial hygiene issues to include: providing toxicological data; arranging and interpreting laboratory analyses; directing studies of specific work processes to evaluate occupational health hazards; investigating clinical reports or complaints of adverse health systems related to the work environment; defining employee work groups that require occupational medical surveillance, etc. Accesses, uses, and maintains appropriate occupational and environmental databases. Reviews plans and specifications of new and modified facilities to ensure compliance with appropriate specifications. Plans, directs and/or participates in occupational health training programs. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science (TRANSRIPT REQUIRED); OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene (TRANSRIPT REQUIRED); OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). (COPY OF CERTIIFCATION REQUIRED) Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE - In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, procedures, standards, equipment, techniques, and methods; managing an industrial hygiene program; performing analysis to determine nature and degree of toxic materials; knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards (such as hazardous waste, drinking water, medical waste, etc.); conducting surveys/studies of work operations regarding hazardous conditions; and developing industrial hygiene policies, procedures, and reports. Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: 1) the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; 2) the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and 3) the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: CommunicationCompliance InspectionHazardous MaterialsHealth Risk Analysis IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Investigations and surveys involve moderate physical exertion, including carrying equipment, climbing, standing, walking, and bending, using personal protective equipment, and occasional working in hot or cold areas, confined spaces, lead and asbestos containment work areas.
