The primary purpose of this position is to plan, lay out, fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and install complex aircraft sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies that have combined straight and curved edges of irregular curves and planes. To provide aircraft structural maintenance support for T-1 and T-6 aircraft, aircraft components, and aerospace ground equipment.

Duties

DUTY 1: Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in manufacturing aircraft sheet metal structures which have combined straight and curved edges, and irregular angles, planes, and curves. DUTY 2: Examines aircraft sheet metal structures to locate cracks, breaks, holes, bulges, dents, and loose or missing rivets. Determines the type and extent of repairs needed to restore original strength to components such as frames, stringers, bulkheads, spars, ribs, and stiffeners. DUTY 3: Uses and maintains tools. Uses basic hand and power tools such as hammers, chisels, hand snips, band and circle saws, squaring shears, seamers, bar folders, brakes, and stakes. DUTY 4: Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. DUTY 5: Establishes and maintains good working relationships.

  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours and tours of duties such as rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, call back, uncommon tours of duty, holidays; etc. May be required to carry a beeper.
  • May be required to travel/deploy TDY as directed by management, sometimes on short notice, traveling by military or commercial aircraft or by any other designated means.
  • May be required to clean up outside building and adjoining grounds as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800 Metal Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of the characteristics and properties of any metals used in the aircraft trade, e.g., stainless steel, magnesium, and alloys. Skill in planning, laying out work in manufacturing/repairing aircraft sheet metal parts and components that have combined straight and curved edges, and irregular angles, planes, and cur doors, panels, windscreens, canopies and other aircraft structures using aircraft technical data. Attendance of Aircraft Structural Maintenance Department of Defense School, civilian equivalent school, or have worked as a structural maintenance technician at least three years out of the last five years on fighter/trainer type aircraft in a fast pace, high tempo maintenance environment with a goal of repairing aircraft within 2 ½ hours to no more than a few days is highly desirable. Typical daily flying schedule averages between 150 and 255 sorties from three flight lines. Ability to meet these real time constraints means the incumbent must constantly redirect his repair efforts between various type aircraft to ensure they meet their mission requirements. 2. Knowledge of advanced shop mathematics to calculate and scribe patterns involving straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes. 3. Knowledge of safety and environmental standards, regulations, and requirements. Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, sketches, technical orders, and technical specifications. 4. Knowledge to evaluate structural damage to aircraft sheet metal structures or items and to make modifications or repairs. Ability to examine aircraft sheet metal structures to locate cracks, breaks, holes, bulges, dents, and loose or missing rivets; and determine the extent of repairs needed to restore original strength to components such as frames, . stringers, bulkheads, spars; ribs, and stiffeners. Skill to plan layout, .manufacture, and install items .and systems with rivets, and related aircraft hardware. Ability to make repairs by selecting the proper type and thickness of metal, cutting to proper size; and, if necessary, forming to proper contour using power or hand tools as necessary 5. Skill in using complicated measuring instruments such as protractors; calipers; snap ring, height, depth, dial, and screw pitch gauges; and other hand measuring devices. Skill in using a wide variety of hand and power tools such as crimping, burring, turning, and bending machines, and soldering and welding machines. 6. Ability to documents work assignments through the use of AFTO Form 781 series and Core Automated Maintenance Systems (CAMS) computer terminals. Order parts and supplies as needed by using CAMS computer. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and the ability to work and interact with others in a business-like manner. Physical Effort: Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier items. Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing; climbing up and down ladders, work stands, and scaffolding; working in very cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools. Work may be preformed in confined spaces or areas such as but not limited to aircraft cockpits, fuel cells, or aircraft intakes. Heavy lifting may be required (40 pounds). Moderate carrying will be required (15-44 lbs). Reaching and working above shoulders for prolong period of time is required. Work requires use of fingers and both hands. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Hearing aid permitted. Annual hearing test is required. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside and is subjected to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines and to a variety of weather conditions. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Required to wear safety glasses when performing eye hazardous operations. Occasionally, may be required to wear a respirator while working in fuel cell areas. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
