The Telephone Operator works as part of the Medical Administrative Service of the Bruce W. Carter Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Miami, FL.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major Duties: Operates a multiline telephone system to receive, answer, resolve and connect incoming and outgoing calls. Routes the calls to their proper destination and provides telephone and organizational information to callers. Answers, resolves, and places follow-up and recurring types of telephone calls such as local and routine long-distance calls. Furnishes information to callers concerning clinic appointments, cancelations, reschedules, telephone extensions, and installations, organizations, function, missions, and staff members. Receives all telephone trouble calls, maintains trouble log, troubleshoots, and notifies the telephone technician of trouble ticket. Operates switchboard equipment to receive, transfer and transmit calls; performs telephone clerical tasks such as referring callers to appropriate agencies, locating telephone numbers; updates and/or maintains files of telephone numbers. Maintains a detailed written record of all reported telephone troubles; this record Is kept for one year. Receives screens and completes all calls and handles all collect and conference calls, verifies authority on calls receives and maintains record of charges. Responsible for all aspects of the operations; of the switchboards including all alerts on nitrous oxide, oxygen, vacuum, blood bank, and air failure. Responsible for the fire alarm system which includes the fire telephone and the fire alarm code tape to be read and notifying all key personnel of the location. Performs all duties as assigned. Qualifications

For GS-4: Possess at least one year of general experience in progressively responsible for clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. To be creditable, general experience must have been equivalent to GS-3 grade level in Federal service. OR Possess a successfully completed 2 years above high school education in any field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR Possess an equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience as described above to meet total experience requirements for the grade level. To compute, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for the grade level. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary but may involve some standing and walking to consult directories and manuals.
