Pharmacy Technicians may be assigned among various sections within the Fayetteville VA Medical Center (FVAMC) Pharmacy Service, at the Wilmington location, as determined by scheduling and workload requirements, performing duties as assigned in order to provide technician coverage on all operating shifts. The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision and goals of the FVAMC.
Duties
Performs varied technical duties in the Outpatient Pharmacy under the direction of the supervisor or staff pharmacist.
Processing and preparing for processing prescriptions by counting, mixing, pouring, combining, or obtaining necessary medications and pharmaceutical products.
Operate, care, and maintain automated dispensing devices and equipment, as well as have knowledge of, and the ability to perform pharmaceutical operations using aseptic techniques, receiving shipments of goods, assuring compliance with storage requirements, and inventory control through perpetual analysis.
Arranges the timing and sequence of assigned task to meet variable workload demands and time schedules as set by Pharmacy/Hospital policies.
Work on prescription/medication orders and intravenous solutions is checked by a pharmacist; other work is reviewed for overall accuracy of results.
Ensures clean room and IV hood are maintained according to Joint Commission and USP guidelines for cleanliness
Interprets medication orders and prepares all intravenous additive solutions (IV Piggybacks, Large Volume Fluid medications and TPNs) utilizing aseptic techniques in a timely manner for final check by a pharmacist.
Selects correct medication, fluid vehicle and makes accurate mathematical calculations using extensive knowledge of IV products and sterile manufacturing practices
Records and monitors all refrigerator temperatures where medication are stored on a daily basis. Informs pharmacy supervisor/chief when temperature is out of range
Inputs drug expiration date and replacement quantity in computer.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Education or Experience: For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Pharmacy Technician, GS-06:
Assignments. Pharmacy technicians at the full performance level may fill orders, dispense/deliver medications using automated systems or provide technical customer service to Veterans related to prescription needs. Duties will include delivery of medications to floors/patients, filling medications for the pharmacist to review, checking for expired medications, answering phones with appropriate disposition, preparing sterile products (when applicable) and assisting with basic inventory management such as putting up stock and identifying when medications need to be ordered.
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower level.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice.
(b) Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation.
(c) Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment.
(d) Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
(e) Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel.
