These positions are located within the Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) Clinical Research Pharmacy Coordinating Center (CRPCC), Information Systems Section (ISS) at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center, Albuquerque, NM. This position provides professional support to the program through the application of computer science theory and practice in the areas of computer system/software design and development, system architecture, and software organization.
Duties

Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:
Applies computer science principles and methods to design and develop novel computer and software systems and evaluate the architecture of current computer systems.
Evaluates information structures used to support clinical research conducted by CSP.
Assesses the productivity, effectiveness, and efficiency of CSP computer systems and makes recommendations to resolve inefficiencies.
Designs and develops complex software applications used in the conduct of large, multi-center clinical trials.
Designs and develops high-speed software systems to support requirements for real-time data processing and data acquisition.
Utilizes computer science concepts, theories, and principles to adapt analytical and evaluation criteria into metrics for improving system/application effectiveness.
Analyzes regulatory requirements, customer needs, and organizational objectives to design computer systems.
Collaborates with executives and managements for strategic planning, decision-making, and problem solving related to research computer systems.
Provides consultation on core computer system infrastructure to support other computer system development activity.
Oversees the development of data management requirements and translates study protocol into information system prototypes.
Develops accurate, efficient, and secure clinical trial systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday - 8am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-12 level, you must meet the following requirements:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: A Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable. (Transcripts Required)

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one full (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-11, in Federal service. This series includes professional positions which primarily involve the application of, or research into, computer science methods and techniques to store, manipulate, transform, or present information by means of computer systems. The primary requirements of the work are (a) professional competence in applying the theoretical foundations of computer science, including computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; (b) specialized knowledge of the design characteristics, limitations, and potential applications of systems having the ability to transform information, and of broad areas of applications of computing which have common structures, processes, and techniques; and (c) knowledge of relevant mathematical and statistical sciences. Note: Clinical research experience is desirable but not required.

Physical Requirements: The work is predominantly sedentary, but slight physical effort by be required. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions.
