This position is located in the Dental Department of the Lawton Indian Hospital, Lawton, Oklahoma. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Chief Dental Officer providing overall supervision and management to dental officers and dental staff of the Lawton Service Unit. The incumbent will ensure provision of dental health services to the designated population in accordance with Indian Health Service policies. This position reports to the Clinical Director of the Lawton Service Unit.

Duties

Independently examine, diagnose, and treat both commonly encountered dental diseases or oral health problems, and dental diseases and oral health problems of greater than usual difficulty. Diagnoses malocclusions, and pathological or irregular conditions, develops treatment plans, and/or ensures proper referral of patients for evaluation or specialty care if beyond the scope of general dental practice. Responsible for the daily operation and management of the dental program in identifying needs related to budget, space, and man power delivery of services. Supervise the duties of dental staff and provide technical dental advice and guidance. Develops, conducts, implements, and evaluates quantity and quality of the service unit dental program and resources.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. You MUST submit a copy of your transcript with your application. Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. You MUST submit copy of your Dentistry license that includes expiration date with your application. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-13: Applicants must have completed a 3-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; OR your resume must demonstrate at least 3-years of equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level, and/or training. Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience at this level includes: removing localized foreign bodies from the gingival tissues and alveolar sockets, performing complicated root canal therapy, muco-gingival surgery, routine and advanced pedodontic procedure, prosthetic treatment involving complicated conditions, and single and complicated multiple extractions of teeth, as well as removing unerupted and impacted teeth and residual root tips. Experience should also include providing administration over a dental program, including managing the budget and staff. Supervisory Abilities: This is a supervisory position and candidates, in addition to the professional qualifications listed, must have demonstrated in their work experience or training, that they possess, or have potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as required for this position. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
