The Senior Dental Laboratory Technician is responsible for the operation of the dental laboratory facility where prosthetic appliances are fabricated on the prescription of the dentist. Responsibility for this operation includes fabrication of prosthetic appliances, knowledge of equipment use and maintenance as well as managing a material supply level.

Duties

Responsible for the operation of the dental laboratory facility where prosthetic appliances are fabricated on the prescription of the dentist. Responsibility for this operation includes fabrication of prosthetic appliances, knowledge of equipment use and maintenance as well as managing a material supply level. Ability to create functional prosthetic appliances from basic materials of metal, ceramic, or resin. Must be able to assess esthetic needs by comparing adjacent, natural teeth to develop a balanced esthetic appliance; and to determine tooth size and shape for edentulous cases, using the markings and instructions for the dentist. Able to produce full dentures, fixed bridgework, crowns, inlays, porcelain fused to metal crowns, pressed ceramic crowns, implant supported prosthetics, and porcelain veneers. The technician works in conjunction with the dentists in effecting the appropriate esthetic and functional characteristics particular to each patient's needs. Work closely with prosthodontists, periodontists, general dentists, as well as other medical specialists in the fabrication of a variety of appliances. Responsible for testing new laboratory materials and equipment under consideration for use in the dental clinic. This would include testing the working properties of new metals, acrylics, porcelains, investment materials, gypsum products and impression materials as well as the usefulness and suitability of new laboratory equipment. Responsible for the training of the other technicians who have not yet acquired advanced training. This includes to develop teaching methods to use in conjunction with the teaching assignments. Employees at this level serve in lead or supervisory dental laboratory technician assignments. Familiar with all specialty removable dental laboratory procedures including the fabrication of implant prostheses. Typically works directly with the both the staff Periodontist and staff Prosthodontist to fabricate complex prostheses. Has the capability to work independently with minimal or no supervision. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement, 11/24/2023 Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-08 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: using dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; using laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; using precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; constructing dental prosthetic appliances; fabricating complex removable and fixed oral-maxillofacial appliance including fixed, semifixed, or removable implant cases, partial and complete dentures, and complex porcelain crowns and fixed bridges. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed two full years of graduate education or a master's degree that is directly related to the work of this position as a Dental Lab Technician. Transcript Required. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education beyond the first 18 semester hours that is directly related to the work of this position as a Dental Lab Technician. Transcripts Required. Preferred Experience: Expert in fixed and removable prosthodontic appliances fabrication. CAD/CAM experience 3+ years You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Interpersonal Skills Materials Engineering Technical Competence Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work involves periods of sitting and standing. It involves the use of various dental lab machines. Extensive and detailed use of the hands is also required.
