This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

The Home Sleep Respiratory Therapist (Sleep RT) adopts multiple roles to ensure adequate functioning of the Home sleep program, Pulmonary Function Testing and sleep pathways of care. The Sleep RT will provide clinical support to The Director of Sleep Medicine and will work within a team comprised of other Respiratory Therapists, Sleep Technologists, Sleep Program Office Manager and other personnel to assist in the administrative, technical and clinical operations of the VA Comprehensive Sleep Center. The incumbent performs duties including but not limited to: Maintains an expertise in the applications and devices used in portable unattended home sleep apnea monitoring. Including technical aspects, care, cleaning and general indications for use of the following: unattended sleep apnea portable monitoring equipment; autotitrating and fixed (single pressure) CPAP units; CPAP interface applications (masks) Performs Pulmonary Function Testing Conducts a sleep clinic were patients are instructed on the "hook up" procedures used with portable monitoring devices and auto-titrating CPAP units to be issued for home use Conducts portable monitoring and autotitrating CPAP procedures in hospitalized patients suspected of having sleep apnea Educates other personnel, including respiratory therapists or physicians, in the use of portable monitoring when requested or required Maintains quality assurance in accordance with American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines and standards regarding Portable monitoring devices and autotitrating CPAP use Contributes to written administrative protocols regarding the home sleep study pathway when required Inventories, tracks and recovers portable sleep apnea monitoring equipment and auto-titrating CPAP units issued for home use or in- hospital use Trouble shoots patient questions regarding home sleep studies Manages home sleep study data in conjunction with the chief sleep technologist and the director of sleep medicine Conducts CPAP acclimatization procedures Conducts CPAP mask fittings/selections Maintains quality assurance in accordance with VA and JC Standards Accommodates education mission of the VA Accommodates research mission of the VA Assists with the Home oxygen program and quarterly Home visit Performs oxygen assessments and provides education to patients and Home oxygen visit. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor. Licensure. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT. Credential. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Registered Respiratory Therapist, GS-12. Experience, Licensure and Credential. Candidates must have one year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. Hold an active license and RRT credential. The following certifications are preferred but not required: Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist Pulmonary Rehabilitation Certificate issued AARC AE-C awarded by the NAECB COPD Educator course offered by the AARC. SDS is Sleep Disorders Specialty from the NBRC ( National Board of Respiratory Care) RPSGT is Registered Polysomnographic Technologists from the BRPT ( Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs: Ability to develop policies and guidelines regarding new and emerging procedures. Ability to implement policies and guidelines regarding new and emerging procedures. Ability to maintain policies and guidelines regarding new and emerging procedures. Ability to make recommendations regarding new and emerging procedures. Ability to perform complex analytical studies of patient care. Ability to interpret results to coordinate the management and evaluation of patient care. Ability to coordinate the work of subordinate staff. Ability to manage all aspects of a complex patient care program including day-to-day operation, training program resources and fiscal management. Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity and range of variety and must be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. This assignment is designated as an RRT Program Coordinator, who oversees the administrative and clinical aspects of a major specialty program at complexity level 1 and 2 facilities only. Programs managed may include, but are not limited to; home oxygen, home ventilators, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinic, pulmonary procedure lab, sleep/positive airway pressure (PAP) clinic. RRTs may supervise and administratively manage employees assigned to their program(s) by providing leadership, direction orientation, in-service training and continuing education programs for assigned staff. They perform analytical studies and interpret results to improve operations. They conduct all phases of service delivery, program resources and fiscal management. RRTs coordinate daily operations, develops and maintains policies and procedures for program operation and prepares reports and statistics for facility and Veterans Integrated Service Network use. They conduct a variety of audits, including clinical practice audits to evaluate operations and productivity and to ensure appropriate documentation of therapy, procedure, clinical outcomes and patient safety. They assist in determining quality and compliance data to be collected and investigates problems related to quality and quantity of work and operating effectiveness and recommends needed action. They make recommendations for program improvement and expansion based on research and emerging knowledge. They represent the department at interdisciplinary meetings. References: Appendix G11. Physical Requirements: Work is sedentary but also demands standing, walking, bending, twisting, and carrying light items. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
