Duties

The social science technician works closely with the park social scientist to better understand visitor use and experience, as well as recreation related impacts in Grand Teton National Park and the John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway. Major duties include: Developing data collection protocols and sampling plans. Collecting social science data related to visitor use, visitor experience, and visitor related resource impacts, including deploying visitor use monitoring equipment, downloading information from equipment, administering face to face interviews with park visitors, observing visitor behaviors, and using GIS equipment and mobile applications. Organizing and consolidating data to prepare for analysis. Analyzing social science data to answer research questions. Communicate social science research via written reports to a range of audiences. Physical Demands: The work is approximately 50% office and 50% field-based. The office work consists of long periods of sitting and intense concentration in an open-office environment. The field work consists of carrying research instruments, hiking, walking, bending, and standing. The incumbent may be required to lift and carry a backpack up to 40 pounds and able to hike in steep and/or uneven terrain. The incumbent will be required to drive a government vehicle to sampling and work sites independently, therefore a driver's license is required. Work Environment: The office setting has adequate heat, light, and ventilation. The outdoor field work will be in varied weather conditions., including varying temperatures (i.e. greater than 80 degrees and less than 40 degree Fahrenheit), inclement weather (e.g. rain, snow, or thunderstorms, etc.), and/or elevations greater than 8,000 feet.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/04/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: collecting data related to visitor use and experience, and visitor related impacts; assisting with developing sampling plans and data collection protocols related to social science research projects; conducting preliminary analysis of social science data; developing preliminary graphs and charts utilizing computer software; preparing and writing draft reports related to visitor use and experience and/or visitor related impacts research ; and assisting specialists with interpretation of results . You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate level education with a major study in a related field such as human dimensions of natural resources; recreation, park and tourism management; ecosystems and society; sociology or other subjects closely related to the duties of this position. One year of graduate education is considered to be 18 semester hours. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience) and 9 related graduate level semester hours (50% of the education), would qualify an applicant for this position You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special prior­ity selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies.
