About the Position: Serves as the Senior Museum Curator for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections (MCX CMAC). This position will be located in St. Louis, MO and will allow for occasional telework only. This position is NOT eligible for full time telework.

Duties

Responsible for exercising direction, management, and oversight for all phases of USACE’s and MCX CMAC's curation program/projects. Responsible for the care, storage, assessment, and accountability of the archaeological collections under the oversight of the MCX CMAC program, which includes all USACE archaeological collections and project requested by other Federal agencies. Develops and manages the regionalization of USACE archaeological collections into regional centers/museums/repositories. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the location, condition, and extent of USACE archaeological collections. Coordinates and oversees collections assessments, reviews, and inventories as required by regulations to properly account for collections and to identify at-risk materials. Develops the annual funding requirements for appropriate curation of USACE archaeological collections. Ensures annual curation budget reflects the costs associated with the needs of the individual collections and the technological advancements. Conducts long-term planning, manages special curation projects, and administers educational programs and surveys for USACE districts, other Federal agencies, and repositories/museums to enhance the use of archaeological collections. Develops the annual funding requirements for appropriate curation of USACE archaeological collections. Answers inquiries concerning the care and identification of USACE archaeological collections. Provides presentations to professional organizations, schools, civic groups, museums, and others to advocate for the educational and research use of USACE collections and to enhance community outreach.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Museum Curator: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field such as archaeological collections management, anthropological curator, etc. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.). OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. OR C. Experience: Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four year course of study as shown in A above. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Minimum Qualifications GS-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in the management of museum and/or archaeological collections in accordance with Federal laws and regulations, such as 36 CFR Part 79 and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA); and acquiring, cataloging, storing, and/or displaying museum and/or archaeological items. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as archeology, anthropology, or museum work. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications GS-12: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing museum and/or archaeological collections in accordance with Federal laws and regulations, such as 36 CFR Part 79 and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA); and directing the acquisition, cataloging, storing, and/or displaying of museum and/or archaeological items. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
