Duties

VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards This position requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 Community Living Center. This position requires rotation of tours or indefinite work on non-administrative tours as established by the immediate supervisor. Self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards. Duties include but are limited to: Practice: Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to client care, organizational processes and/or systems, improving outcomes at the program or service level. Ethics: Provides leadership in identifying and addressing ethical issues that impact clients and staff, including initiating and participating in ethics consultations. Resource Utilization: Manages program resources (financial, human, material, or informational) to facilitate safe, effective, and efficient care. Utilizes nursing process as a basis for systematic and creative management of patients/systems or processes at the program or Care Line level. Demonstrates proficiency in collecting patient data by interview, examination and review of records systematically; completes nursing assessment within the required time frame and develops a nursing care plan. Integrates biopsychosocial concepts and cognitive skills into practice. Applies advance knowledge and specialized skills in delivery of care to patients with a variety of simple and complex care needs. Delegates assignments consistent with personnel's abilities and patient needs. Establishes priorities according to timely achievement of program/Care Line goals and objectives. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient population in accordance with the area of assignment, including the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient need and to provide the care needed. Utilizes BCMA and CPRS to verify and carry out physician's orders correctly. Demonstrates proficiency in advance and highly technical skills necessary for the care of patients. Initiates infection control measures, practices and principles of asepsis. Uses automated information system appropriately and maintain its security in compliance with medical center policy. Demonstrates sensitivity to the cultural values and beliefs of patients and staff. Abides by the VHA ethical standards of conduct and participates in facility's Compliance Awareness Education. Supports the facility's EEO/affirmative action programs by executing assigned duties and responsibilities in a professional manner. Demonstrates safe and correct technique in the use of equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of Fire Plan and Emergency Disaster Plan. Follows safe work practices and procedures, including use of required personal protective equipment. Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs assuming responsibility and accountability for nursing actions. Assesses patient's learning needs, learning preference and readiness to learn, develops and implements a plan to meet needs, and instructs patients and families. Promotes discharge planning and continuity of care through developing an individualized plan of care in collaboration with the patient and health care team. Documents in the medical record patient findings, assessments, and care provided. Administers medication in accordance with established procedure/policy. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information including verbal communication, electronic and print. Follows restraint and seclusion procedure and implements measures to reduce restraint and seclusion. Care provided is based on patient needs and delivered in a safe, efficient, and cost- effective manner. Initiates action to resolve patient care problems. Initiates and maintains a compatible working relationship with other units or other Care lines in order to obtain cooperative sharing of resources. Demonstrates safe work practices appropriate for the position, i.e., how to report a safety hazard, proper body mechanics, or use of personal protective equipment. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: At least one (1) year of RN experience. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), pulling, pushing, repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking, depth perception, hearing (aide permitted); near/far vision correctable to meet Driver's License requirements. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes-fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes-noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
