Duties

The position serves as a technical assistant in the performance of a variety of hydrology tasks, either as a crew member or individual worker. Develops, assembles, evaluates, adapts, and presents in tabular or graphic form, technical data in the fields of water data collection, stage data, stream discharge, rainfall, and wind gaging. Prepares criteria for use in calibrating stream flow in open and controlled channels. Conducts detailed analyses for use by hydrologists and engineers in considering possibility of applying engineering theories to the rise and fall of water, water slopes, natural and artificial controls, etc. Collects data from field recording instruments and makes on-site measurements of study area conditions. Assists on field survey crews in the collection of resource data. Prepares a variety of charts, graphs, and figures for data analysis and publication. Prepares correspondence, in draft form, relating to all phases of the work; initiates directives for securing data needed. Maintains liaison with other Forest Service staff, and with other Federal, state and local agencies and with public and private interests having a common interest in the collection and dissemination of the hydrological data. Services, repairs, and installs a variety of hydrologic instruments. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of a 2-year probationary period is required.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • As a field going position working in brown or black bear habitat, this position is required to be firearm certified for personal and/or crew safety.
  • Executive Order 12564 requires employees designated to carry a firearm to be subject to random drug testing. This position will be subject to random drug testing and will be placed in the applicant testing pool.
  • This position requires initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996.
  • This is a Test Designated Position. You will be tested for illegal drugs prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results.

Qualifications

You must meet the ANILCA eligibility requirements to be referred for this position. Eligibility Requirements: You must have lived and or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Chugach National Forest or Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the natural and cultural resources in Southcentral or Southeast Alaska area to participate in natural resources activities.
