Incumbent serves as advisor in the management of natural resources. Responsible for program development and implementation. Program may include, vegetation, wildlife, sensitive species, fisheries, air/water quality, soils, geology, hydrology, paleontology, other physical sciences and range mgmt.

Duties
Plan and implement scientifically rigorous research on issues affecting the park.
Maintain, operate and manage GIS and GPS equipment, software, data, peripherals and database management systems by digitizing, converting, and importing data acquisition; preparing GIS plans; writing FGDC-compliant metadata; and training others in use of GIS. Apply statistical tests using GIS and programs and operate computer software.
Work cooperatively with federal agencies, state, county, and local government, water rights shareholders, neighboring ranches, and the general public, vegetation, water, air, soundscapes, native species, exotic plant management, cultural landscapes, water rights, and agricultural activities.
Work cooperatively with the Federal, state, and county environmental agencies, University scientists, park management, and the general public. Includes advanced knowledge and experience in the application of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act, and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, (CERCLA), Superfund and other regulatory policies affecting the environment with cooperators.
Supervise subordinates carrying out the park's natural resource management program. This includes recruitment, selection, hiring, training, assigning and monitoring workloads, and scheduling staff.
Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Work Environment: Work is performed primarily indoors. Occasionally, work may be performed outdoors in all types of weather. Outdoor assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. On occasion, flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Chaco Culture NHP is located in the Four Corners area of New Mexico. The nearest towns are Bloomfield - 65 miles northwest, Farmington - 75 miles northwest, and Aztec - 70 miles northeast. The nearest grocery store is located at Crownpoint - 39 miles south. Schools, shopping, doctors, hospital, etc. are located in the towns of Bloomfield, Farmington, and Aztec. Closest elementary and high schools are 65 miles one way in Bloomfield. Roads from the south are all dirt for 19 miles. Precipitation for the area is minimal. Rain and snow are not common; and either can make the roads impassable. Aztec Ruins NM is located in the small town of Aztec, in San Juan County, New Mexico population about 8,500. All facilities are available in Aztec and Farmington, 15 miles distant. Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
GS-0401: Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR Combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
GS-1301: Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
For the GS-11: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-09 grade level performing work related to the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include: Conducting inventories, monitoring, evaluating and developing practical management strategies in restoring and improving upland and riparian ecosystems; Planning, conducting and interpreting the inventory, planning, management, and monitoring of key data; Evaluating riparian ecosystems, to determine stream habitat and channel stability, geomorphology, instream aquatic habitat, physical/biological water quality parameters, and/or water quality measurement techniques; Identifying upland and riparian plant communities and ecological sites to determine condition, trend, and potential for sites; and/or Utilizing soil science, geology, and range management techniques to prevent adverse impacts to wetlands.
OR
Three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or LL.M., in a field that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to conduct the work of this position such as biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, physical sciences or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.), related to the position to be filled and as described in B above.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
