These positions are located at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in Juneau, Alaska. The positions are permanent, full time seasonal with 18 pay periods in pay status and 8 pay periods of nonpay work. The positions provide visitors with information, education and interpretive services for a site that is administered by the Forest Service. Duties

Educates the general public by providing orientation, interpretive, and regulatory information relating to site specific regulations. Assists in issuing special permits for wildlife and natural resource recreational activities and special events. Assists in conducting teacher training programs and orientations. Presents educational information to the general public and special groups on forest natural resources and historical programs. Explains visitor center practices to ensure proper use of public facilities. Conducts interpretative talks to the general public, conservation education programs and special groups. Communicates effectively with visitors and staff to aid in implementing the visitor center's outreach program. Maintains working relationships with partnership organizations by attending events, functions and giving informative talks. Assists with the development of interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts and exhibits. Drafts written materials that include news releases, articles and event flyers. Prepares written materials to encourage special event attendance and explain the practices of the visitor center.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-05 level: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal service defined as preparing and presenting information, education, and interpretive services to the general public and special groups on forest natural resources and historical programs. OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work; OR appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience. Substitution of Education for Experience: Qualifying coursework includes natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
