Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner depending on management needs. The typical seasonal period is March - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Duties

This position is located within the Division of Natural Resource Management, Cape Cod National Seashore. The incumbent serves as the Biological Science Technician for the shorebird management and protection program. Expected entry on duty date is March 2024. The Biological Science Technician for Cape Cod National Seashore's Shorebird Management and Protection Program monitors nesting, migrating, and staging shore birds, and implements management measures to ensure these species are protected. Species addressed include sensitive and special status species such as piping plovers, least terns, common terns, roseate terns, and American oystercatchers. Duties include: ensuring protection measures meet the requirements of federal and state Endangered Species Acts, federal and state management guidelines, park policies and guidelines, the Negotiated Rule for operation of the park's Off-Road Vehicle Corridor and corresponding Environmental Assessment; coordinating with law enforcement staff regarding management of off-road vehicles, dog-walking, and other types of recreation that could adversely affect nesting and staging shore birds; coordinating with the neighboring district Shorebird Biological Technician to provide for consistent and integrated shorebird monitoring, protection, and reporting; preparing weekly reports and assists with preparation of the annual report; directing the work of temporary employees, interns, and volunteers; and educates the public through formal and informal interpretive activities; using a microcomputer to record geographic data regarding nest and colony locations.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/17/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped me (the applicant) with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this position include assisting with the performance of wildlife inventories, monitoring and protection activities for a variety of wildlife species. This work may have involved conducting field surveys in remote locations to document and assess animal presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, and population dynamics using established protocols and standard scientific equipment. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as environmental sciences, biology, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, wildlife sciences, ecology, natural resource sciences / monitoring, chemistry, statistics, physics, agriculture, mathematics, or other directly-related subject area. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position being filled (e.g. Ecology, Biology, and Wildlife Sciences). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
