The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administrations (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Richmond, Virginia VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Utility System Section of Facility Management Service.
Duties
Major duties include:
Performs extensive control work such as checking, adjusting, installing, and modifying electronic, electric, and pneumatic controls as necessary to maintain proper control, which requires extensive knowledge of system design and operation.
Maintain, install, hook up, modify design parameters, write computer programs and put into operation all types of A/C systems, and to operate and repair refrigeration and air conditioning equipment by using the Johnson Control Metasys(equipment on-site since 2000) & Trane Tracer Summit Building Automation System(equipment on-site for 10 years) also the Hays Cleveland Boiler Management System(equipment on-site since 2009) and/or Cooper Atkins Temp Trak Control System (equipment on-site since 2005)and the ASCO Power Quest Monitoring & Control Ma1Jagement System for the Emergency/Standby Generator Paralleling System(Equipment new on-site since 2017).
Recognize the causes of faulty equipment and be able to make necessary repairs, and modifications to achieve desired operations, if necessary.
Diagnoses trouble or defects in sensors, field cabinets, control consoles, electronic control boards in motor control centers, and determines corrective action.
Disconnects and dismantles electronic controlled instruments as necessary and corrects trouble or defects by adjusting, repairing, or replacing parts or units. The incumbent works with electrical circuits from 240 volts to 24 volts.
Maintain the Johnson Control Metasys Building Automation System operating correctly.
Insure the Cooper Atkins Temp Trak Control System is configured and operating correctly.
Troubleshoot data base problems from a remote location with the use of a personal computer and modem hook-up.
Support other utility shops as need arises.

Physical Requirements. In the performance of the equipment mechanic functions, he incumbent is expected to be able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, stooping, bending, crawling, frequent lifting, carrying or otherwise handling items weighing up to 501bs. Incumbent must be able to work from ladders in congested areas, where incumbent is expected to work overhead in tight, cramped or awkward positions for prolonged periods of time. Incumbent must be able to work under and inside of a variety of equipment.
Working Conditions. Must be able to work in areas not adequately lighted, ventilated and heated. Work surfaces are not usually even or may be slick or oily, also tight, cramped, wet, dry and dusty locations. Incumbent may be exposed to moving machinery and be subject to sharp edges and may receive cuts and bruises, minor burns, scrapes, and electrical shocks. Incumbent is subjected to extreme hot and cold temperatures; work is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy, with exposure to a potentially hazardous or contagious environment found within a complex medical center. Must be able to use good judgment and initiative to accomplish this job, because most of the time he will be working alone.
