The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System is recruiting for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) - Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to join our dynamic team at Lake City VA Medical Center.

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) - Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health service uses advanced practice nursing process, competency, and skills to: Assess, diagnose, monitor, promote health and protection from disease, and manage various actual or potential conditions, illnesses, disorders, and injuries of patients presenting to the Psychiatry Service. The APRN assists in admitting Psychiatry Service patients to the hospital using established processes; directly admit to MHSL Residential Treatment Programs, order VA specialty consults, and initiates requests for non-VA care. Major duties and responsibilities for the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health include, but are not limited to:
Perform and document history and physical examinations.
Develop and order plans of care inclusive of behavior modification modalities when applicable and using holistic models of care approach.
Order and/or perform appropriate Psychiatry Service focused and related laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic tests, and integrate the results into clinical decision making.
Provide Psychiatry Service focused and related counseling and education to patients, families, and caregivers.
Triage Psychiatry Service consultations, and initiate/expedite added Psychiatry Service consultation for patients with Psychiatry Service related conditions, illnesses, disorders, and injuries.
Manage acute and chronic Psychiatry Service related conditions, with focus on health promotion, protection, and preservation, disease prevention, risk reduction, behavior modification, and patient education and counseling.
Conduct preparatory work-up for Psychiatry Service procedures and post Psychiatry Service procedures management.
Prescribe, order, and administer formulary drugs in accordance with VA regulations, guidelines of the federal Controlled Substances Act, and state of licensure laws and regulations.
Conduct individual, group, and family therapy, perform crisis intervention services, emergency psychiatric evaluations, and initiate/implement involuntary inpatient hospitalization procedures; order consults and placements for continued mental health (MH) and substance use disorders (SUD) specialty residential care; order consults and assessments for participation in MH and SUD programs.
Assess, stabilize, reduce risk, manage or coordinate care, and determine disposition of patients presenting with various urgent and/or emergent psychiatric/mental health conditions, illnesses, disorders, and injuries, to the Urgent Care and/or Emergency Department.
Utilize Telehealth Modalities to perform clinical care and services in accordance with established Telehealth Clinics or other approved methods of virtual care delivery.
Utilizes electronic communications (Telemedicine) in the provision of care as authorized to direct, diagnose, or otherwise provide clinical treatment using electronic communications and information technology when distance separates the authorized provider and patient, such as CVT (Clinical Video Telehealth) and VVC (VA Video Connect).
Utilizes electronic communications for consults (Teleconsultation) in the provision of advising on a diagnosis, prognosis, and/or therapy from an authorized provider using electronic communications and information technology to support the care provided when distance separates the participants, and where hand-offs on care is delivered at the site of the patient by an authorized provider.
Provided one-on-one patient education or group patient education offering instruction regarding disease states, conditions, medications, equipment, or related care by an authorized provider.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Board Certified as a qualified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMH NP) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (PMH-CNS) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or another VA approved qualified Organization OR Criteria for granting appointment or reappointment of clinical privileges
Preferred Experience: Experience with Substance Use Disorders
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements include visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. May involve potentially long periods of lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Safe patient handling equipment is provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive, sit and/or ride in GSA-vehicles for long periods of time.
In-direct patient care work is mostly sedentary. Typically the employee sits comfortably to complete the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items such as patient records and supplies. In-direct care staff may be assigned to work in direct care areas as needed.
