About the Position: This position is located in the Trasportation Division, 407th Army Field Support Brigade, Fort Carson, CO

Duties

Serves as crew member in charge, the Conductor performs duties as crewmember of a depot train crew. Ensures that braker/switchers are properly placed and follow pertinent regulations, instructions, and requirements. Observes all railroad traffic and safety laws. Implement procedures for special handling of cargo under a variety of conditions. Perform the duties of a Breaker-Switcher. Direct the safe makeup and operation of a 120 ton diesel-electric locomotive.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain Tier 1 (NACI) investigation.
  • This position requires a valid, United State issued motor vehicle driver's license.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019- R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • This position requires successful completion of pre-placement medical examinations and annual thereafter.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess or have the ability to obtain Locomotive Engineer/Conductor Certification given at U.S. Army Transportation School Fort Eustis, Virginia / DA FORM 87, 1 Oct 1978. within 1 year of start date.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess or have the ability to obtain Railway Operations Crewmembers Civilian Certification given at U.S. Army Transportation School Fort Eustis, Virginia / DA FORM 87, 1 Oct 1978. within 1 year of start date.
  • This position may require the incumbent to to work shift work during rail operation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to travel (TDY) up to 5% of the time

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Conductor without more than normal supervision. independently working as a Conductor crew member in charge on 120 ton diesel electric locomotives. I monitor and direct the safe makeup, breakup, and movement of trans as well as placement of rail cars in holding areas and work areas. I have performed the duties of a barker-switcher. I make certain that brakes are properly placed and follow movement regulations. I receive and relay message to the crew for placement of cars. I check crew's compliance with safety and movement regulations of railcars. I decided the best placement and sequence of railcars. I oversee the transport of fragile and hazardous cargo by railroad and movement regulations of railcars. - - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle)Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)Operation of Motor VehiclesReliability And DependabilityWork Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Must use physical agility and effort in pushing, pulling, lifting, positioning and turning various braking, switching, and coupling devices; moving and lifting arms and devices to give signals; walking over rails and ties and running to perform tasks. Must be able to climb aboard locomotives and train cars, sometimes while they are moving or have slippery steps, rungs, and grab irons. Required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and put forth similar effort in pushing and removing obstacles from the railway. Works under many adverse conditions in both good and bad weather. Frequently exposed to loud noise, fumes and odors. Exposed to possible injuries from accidents. May wear protective clothing, such as safety shoes and gloves. Any unusual environmental working conditions that may arise will be compensated for under an appropriate category of the environmental pay regulation.
