About the Position: Join us at the United States Southern Command. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations. Our contribution to furthering our country's relationships with South and Central American nations and peoples are substantial.

Duties

Serve as the Joint Fires Element (JFE) Branch Chief in the USSOUTHCOM Directorate of Operations (SCJ3) and provide leadership and management of the branch. Serve as a planner and advisor for all theater strategic targeting operations supporting command joint fires against drug trafficking (CD), illicit threat networks (CTN), and external state actors (ESA) operations. Develop and conduct analysis of program and activities associated with the formulation of Joint Fires-related requirements and activities. Synchronize the employment and utilization of operational assets throughout the area of responsibility (AOR) and across multiple agencies both foreign and domestic. Work with government and civil agencies and non-governmental organization to develop and implement strategies to counter threats, improve hemispheric security, and advance the national defense strategy. Lead, supervise, oversee and manage the JFE Branch personnel and the coordination of all operational requirements.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET security clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI), with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
  • Subject to short notice recall. Overtime and shift work may be required on short notice to include nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Infrequent international travel required, occasionally to an austere environment where the incumbent will be expected to function in adverse climatic conditions.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 35% of the time.
  • Required to deploy within the USSOUTHCOM AOR on short notice (in under 24 hours) by multiple means of ground and air transportation, as directed by Commander USSOUTHCOM in response to
  • a Presidential Disaster Declaration (PDD) involving acts of terrorism, natural disasters, homeland defense and civil support contingency plans and general war.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated “Non-Combat Essential” to support expeditionary requirements in other than combat or combat support situations.
  • Employee could be deployed to support emergency operations, humanitarian missions, disaster relief or other expeditionary missions in the CONUS or overseas, that are not considered "combat" locations.
  • May be required to wear an electronic pager and maintain a working telephone at all times.
  • Supervisory probationary period may be required.
