This Boiler Plant Operator position is in Facilities Management services at the White River Junction VA Medical Center, located at the White River Junction, Vermont location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
The Boiler Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, minor repair, lubrication, and adjustment of the Boiler Plant equipment.
Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Operate the Boiler Plant in a safe and economical manner to provide a continuous supply of steam to the station; and adjusts combustion controls, feedwater controls and other controls when necessary.
Maintain log sheets by gathering operating data such as feedwater temperature boiler pressure, stack temperatures and number of pounds of steam generated hourly.
Make regular water tests and treats boiler feedwater with chemicals as required.
Perform preventive maintenance such as lubrication, adjustment, minor parts replacement, and necessary minor repairs designed to keep plant and equipment in good operating condition.
Maintains and updates preventive maintenance procedure and inspections on a recurring basis for all equipment related to the Boiler Plant.
Perform general maintenance such as lubrication, adjustment, minor parts replacement, and necessary minor repairs designed to keep plant and equipment in good operating condition.
Operate various computer based environmental control systems, i.e., Johnson Controls Metasys, etc. which monitors and controls 80 percent of the hospital's heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) / humidity control systems.
Operates systems, makes decisions, and implements procedures to provide an uninterrupted supply of steam to this facility.
Analyze operations of the Boiler Plant to support, maintain and update information for the Boiler Plant quality assurance program.
Monitors and places requests, to the supervisor, for fuel oil as needed during the heating season.
Miscellaneous painting of equipment and utility lines, general cleaning of the boilers, equipment, utility lines, general areas, etc.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Alternate Schedule. Schedule will be based on the facilities needs.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be physically able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, climbing ladders and stairs, crawling inside of tight spaces such as boilers, and heavy lifting. Must be able to work in bent, prone or crouched positions; must have good or corrected eye sight for observing water columns and gauges; must have good hearing for detecting noises that would indicate trouble with boilers, A/C chiller and auxiliary equipment.
Work Environment: Incumbent is subject to high temperatures within the Boiler Plant during all seasons of the year. Is subject to cuts, burns and bruises, smoke and gas fumes, and elevated noise levels. Some of the work accomplished is strenuous, and is at times, greasy and dirty.
