As a Supervisory AST Computer Engineer (Branch Chief) within the Flight Operations Directorate Mission Systems Division, you will be responsible for leading a team of highly skilled employees responsible for the conception, planning, specification, design, analysis, development, installation, test, modification, operation, maintenance and use of data handling and computing systems for the Mission Systems at the Johnson Space Center in support of all human spaceflight programs.
Duties
Performs a full range of supervisory duties which includes assigning and evaluating work; recommending personnel actions; taking disciplinary actions; and identifying training needs and developing employees.

Participates in Division Staff meetings, obtains resources, identifies strategic objectives for the branch, defines technical work requirements and milestones, resolves performance and management issues or problems and recognizes high performance.
Manages computer engineering work involving the application of engineering and scientific theories and principles to complex computer-based systems, and computer engineers who devise software to integrate several devices into a computer system.
Manages and leads planning, research, design, development, test and evaluation, cost analyses, project management, and monitors contracted work for information technology in support of the Mission Systems.
Directs personnel performing computer engineering work including the application of theories, principles, practical concepts, processes, and methods related to computer systems design requirements, cybersecurity, standards, codes, and techniques.
Works alongside contract computer engineers to perform various duties to provide new equipment, incorporate new technologies, improve reliability, extend the life of the Mission Systems Division facilities, and reduce total ownership costs.
Supports equipment systems (involving both the hardware and software), and data systems for acquiring, reducing, computing, and producing data products to meet end-to-end data system’s needs for the Mission Systems Division.
Requirements

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level:
Providing the Flight Operations Directorate with client services and enabling services in support of human spaceflight by resolving unique or novel problems, conditions/issues, significantly alter standard practices, equipment, devices, processes, or known techniques.
Operating digital computer systems including computers, peripherals, data handling equipment, interfacing techniques, cybersecurity, and/or data communications systems used to enhance and sustain Mission Systems in support of human spaceflight; and
Identifying requirements, and solutions that fit within the budget, priorities, and risk posture of Mission Systems.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
