This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Personnel of the DoD Work Force to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Performs a variety of tasks in connection with the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of buildings, related structures, fixtures, and grounds at the Thurmond Project and in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam.

Duties

Plan, organize, direct, and participate in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of buildings, related structures, fixtures and grounds at the J Strom Thurmond powerplant. Plan, organize, direct, and participate in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of buildings, related structures, fixtures and grounds at the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam (NSBLD). Assist hydropower crafts in performing preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and overhauls of large hydroelectric generators and appurtenant equipment. Operate various machine shop equipment, i.e., lathes, drill presses, bench grinders, hydraulic presses, and pipe threaders, and various air or electric portable tools, i.e., drills, grinders, and impact wrenches, including gas and electric welding. Maintain various power tools in proper working order. Repair minor damage to plaster, sheet rock, tile walls, ceilings, and floors. Builds forms and mixes and finishes cement for small construction jobs. Operate and maintains overhead and gantry cranes, forklifts, and personnel lifts. Maintain and repairs sanitary plumbing, septic tanks and potable water system; clean drain, sewer line and storm drains; repairs water lines; replaces fixtures and washers; etc. Assist supervisor in planning work and determining equipment and materials needed to complete work. Work safely from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms when performing painting and maintenance tasks. Works in close cramped quarters requiring awkward positioning. Maintain records and data in connection with all maintenance and repair work of JST Powerplant and NSBLD.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Incumbent is subject to inclement weather conditions and potential hazards associated with working around power generating equipment, overhead cranes, moving vehicles and equipment.
  • Work areas may be in close, cramped quarters requiring awkward positioning and will involve climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common Maintenance Worker task/activities. Participate in the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of electrical, mechanical, plumbing equipment, or electric-generating equipment at a heavy industrial plant. The ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain plumbing and potable water system. The skillsets to complete small construction jobs. Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
