The Lead Patient Services Assistant serves in the Eligibility and Enrollment unit, Benefits Section, Business Office, within the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. This position is responsible for leading, distributing and balancing workload among Patient Services Assistants in accordance with established workload and job specifications.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Leads, distributes and balances workload among employees.
Ensures assigned workload is completed timely and assures that employees are fully utilized.
Provides guidance and technical directions necessary for accomplishing the work of the team and unit.
Provides training to new employees, instructing them in established policies, procedures and practices.
Advises supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs that cannot be disposed of promptly.
Maintains records of work accomplishments and time expended and prepares production reports when requested.
Interprets and applies benefits associated with local and national sharing agreements, Memorandum of Understanding and contractual agreements with other federal state, local and private entities.
Interprets and applies VA rules and regulations relating to determining complex legal eligibility to benefits relating to hospital admissions, nursing home, hospice, catastrophic disabilities, domiciliary, fee basis, outpatient care, dental treatment, prosthetic appliances, patient transfer and beneficiary travel.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, between the hours of 5:00am - 6:00pm, some weekends and holidays
Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. This position may be authorized for Ad Hoc only telework. Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Minimum Qualifications: You must qualify based on your experience as described below:
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to: interpreting and applying regulations, public laws, directives, policies and procedures; gathering and analyzing data; determining patient eligibility for healthcare services; using computer applications such as medical record or scheduling software; and/or providing guidance to staff on complex issues.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
