This position is located at the Jesse Brown VA Hospital and is organizationally aligned under Medical Imaging. The Radiology Health Technician purpose is to provide technical assistance for inpatients and outpatients with responsibilities: organizing and directing patients, assist with lab draws to evaluate renal function status prior to intravenous contrast enhanced CT or MR procedures that require this information; support activities within Radiology on a day-to-day basis.
Duties
Transports inpatients to and from Emergency Department, transports patients and charts to and from procedure areas within imaging.
Ensures patient care areas are clean and stocked with equipment and supplies.
Responsible for checking lab results in the computer and alerting the Technologist to potential problems.
Receives requests for procedures and prioritizes with CT/MRI staff orders from ED.
Assists to schedule regular examination appointments and add-on exams in a manner to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases.
Answers incoming calls and updates patients' pertinent information in the facility computer system; makes phone calls to patients reminding of upcoming appointments and no-shows.
Responsible for explaining exams to competent patients in terms the patient will comprehend as well as understanding potential hazards that may occur as a result of the exam.
Responds to emergency situations such as cardiopulmonary failure, by assisting in the performance of resuscitation measures. Maintains medical instruments and equipment for diagnostic procedures.
Maintains sterility of equipment and supplies while setting up for Imaging Guided procedures.
Properly disposes off any sharps, contaminated items and regular waste according to hospital policies, after procedure is completed.
Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and 'sharps'; proper attire; hand-washing practices; and continuing education.
Works with the staff as a member of the radiographic team in the performance of guided procedures.
Provides general clerical/administrative support coordination work for the department. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients.
Properly identifies patient images and confirms patient identity by verbally confirming two identifiers - patient name and social security number or birthday- seeking active response.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, facility applicants must meet all requirements within (30 days) of the closing date of this announcement. All non-facility applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/21/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR):
An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can't be waived. The IOR for the GS-05 grade level is:
Candidates possess experience that requires application of knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. (This position is part of the series that range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.)

Candidates have successfully completed full-4 year course of study leading to a Bachelor's Degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. (NOTE: Copy of Transcript(s) required).
In addition to the IOR above, applicants must meet the Specialized Experience listed below.
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience using various computer menus such as CPRS, DHCP etc.; knowledge of processing and storing requirements for lab specimens; Experience checking lab results in computer; preparing patients and assisting with clinical activities; knowledge of medical terminology; Experience scheduling patient appointments in a computerized system; skill in communication to appropriately and courteously relate to patients and families regarding their medical procedure; experience receiving and triaging phone calls and visitors for the appropriate assistance; providing administrative support for a Radiology Technologist; performing both clerical and clinical duties in a medical/healthcare environment; reviewing and documenting medical records; MUST be certified in Basic CPR (BLS).

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. Transcripts Required.

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5. Transcripts Required.

Physical Requirements: The work involves periods of standing as well as considerable walking, bending, stooping, stretching, lifting, moving of equipment and positioning of patients. The work also requires agility and dexterity to handle medical instrumentation.
