This position is located in the Engineering Service at the Hudson Valley VAMC - Castle Point.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Planning: H/She coordinates, establishes deadlines, and priorities on the basis of general work schedules, methods and policies established by higher level supervision. Incumbent monitors the performance of any maintenance/service contract involving systems under the direct purview of the shop. Work Direction: Supervisor inspects the work site to determine methods of repair: supplies tools and the level of manpower needed to successfully complete the work. Assigns Pipefitters to specific tasks and supervises these activities, assisting in layout, fabrication and assembly problems as required. H/She supervises maintenance, repair and calibration of building heating and cooling control systems. Supervisor also coordinates the activities of the shop to coincide with those of other crafts as required in the pursuit of the work. Directly supervises helpers, workers and journeymen mechanics in repairs, maintenance, and new installations. Duties include work involved in the installation, modification, and repair of utility, supply, and disposal systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment such as sewage, water, gas, and oil lines, compressed air, vacuum, and acid systems, water closets, water heaters, hydrants, valves, and pumps; duties also include work involved in the installation, modification, and repair of high-pressure piping systems. The work involves installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators. Administration: Incumbent orders materials including tools necessary to complete the work. Incumbent maintains Joint Commission paperwork such as inspection reports, maintenance records, and repair work orders on a variety of equipment. Keeps track of subordinate employees time and attendance, approves leave, determines training needs for employees, conducts performance appraisal reviews for subordinate employees, acts on behalf of next higher level supervisor on occasion. Makes recommendations for promotion or reassignments of subordinates. Performs other assigned duties. Qualifications

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, RepairLead or SuperviseMeasurement and LayoutShop Practices Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
